anyone have experience with a yamaha ttr125/230 or honda cr125f/230f?

Bought the GF an XT225 which is essentially the same bike as a TTR225/230 just street legal. Im usually a honda fan but wanting street legal smaller dual sport limited me. But glad i went that route vs the converted CRF230 i looked at as the XT225 has a HUGE following with that motor going 50+k miles without more than oil chances. Been a super easy bike to work on.

 

Damn. I miss commuting to work on the bike. I have a bunch of shit I need to take with me to and from everyday so taking the bike is annoying (backpack required). That leaves me with weekends, but lately every weekend has been fabrication and/or installs. Been busy so I shouldn’t really complain.

 

Two buddies suggested 125s for the seat height and 50lb lighter. Also for the gf so she can come with me on dirtbike trips

 

@TXpro4X4 has a ttr125

 

Xt225 is heavy and terrible off-road. If you are looking at a dirtbike for her look into a klx140l

 

How tall is your lady and how much does she weigh?
I have ridden all that you ask about.
Own ttr 125, it's the ladys. And my 12yr old is learning on it. She has been on 2 times and loves it.

Currently she rides a lowered r6 so she has experience. Just looking for something for the dirt thats reliable. Air cooling hasnt been an issue?

 

air cooled bikes are still used all over the world, including 3rd world paradises right along the equator.
As long as the air is cooler than the head, it's still cooling.
Never had an issue with my Himalayan from freezing to 115 degrees at 20mph.

 

yeah never had a problem with air cooled bikes so long as you arent sitting there doing a burnout at WOT, riding a heavily modified air cooled motor, or riding a hardley.

What kawi gave you a bad taste? The klx140L is super reliable and with a little suspension work it is best in class. I plan on getting my wife one when I find a good deal on one.

 

Just really no taste for them. Id rather have a honda or yamaha.

Any regrets not getting a 230 for the lady? Or is the 125 plenty? The 18/21 are the appealing part of the 230 but not the 50 extra pounds

 

ive owned both a klx125l and a klx140l

the 125l was much better for the dicking around I did with them

the 140 was nice with the push button start but the push button is not worth the extra weight... the compression is low enough on these for anyone to kick them over

+1 for buying honda and yamaha, but also for the right price a drz or klx could fit the bill.


I would suggest finding something used though, all these new bikes are heavier than say 10 years ago, many seem like they sit lower though so I know comfort plays a big part as does push button start and having all new hardware in general
