I'm 6'3" and got my GT IDXC full suspension for around $700 shipped. It's an XL frame, mechanical disk brakes, fox rear shock and manitou fork, and I believe it's a 29 speed. The only thing is it may need some tweaking when you get it depending on how much you weigh. I'm at 240 and needed to get a firmer spring for the fork and boost up the psi in the rear shock. Also I replaced the tubes with thorn proof slime tubes.[IMG]

dont let people harsh mechanicals. while not being POWER MONSTERS they usually have more power, modulation and wear longer than rim brakes.

combine that with being RIDICULOUSLY easy to fix, being dirt cheap(comparatively) and they'll let you limp back to the taco with a bent rim.

    and they're still worth it.

though i can only vouch for shimano and avids offerings, since i have put miles on both.

another option if you like working with tools and want a better bike.

is to buy a frame like this one (if i dont buy a cross bike i may buy this frame!)

http://www.competitivecyclist.com/mountain-bikes/frame/2009-Santa-Cruz-chameleon-5156.html (not posting a pic because that site is wonderfully interactive! CLICK IT!)

and build it to suit. if your local shop wants to do right by you, they will recommend the right parts for your described style. and you can put them on as budget permits

this can also do 2 differant things for you.
you can put a cheap ass build kit (possibly from another bike!) on it

    like so http://pricepoint.resultspage.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=build+kit&asug=

    and upgrade as money permits,

or you can put the perfect top shelf parts on over time till you have a complete bike....

but, take that sweet 600 dollar santa cruz

    bolt on THIS KIT.
    http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/15...ts-135-Build-Kits/Sram-X.9-Disc-Build-Kit.htm

pick out a fork (for this frame i pick the fox 36,but its PRICEY and I'm a bit outdated on fork tech.... another fork that interests me is a marzocchi 66 ATA, but it may be over kill on this frame)

but anyways, here's over a hundred deals on forks
    http://pricepoint.resultspage.com/search?p=Q&srid=S1%2d4&lbc=pricepoint&ts=custom&w=forks&uid=33849470&method=and&isort=score&view=list&srt=0

anyways, good luck and hope i was at least a bit helpful!

schwinn seems to be the best thing huffy puts out. when i was still working on walmart bikes, schwinns were my favorite, because i never had to fix them before i built them!

but they dont come close to my scott!

Don't forget to add on another $40-75 for assembly. I forgot to check, but did it include everything(esp. pedals.) Unless you've assembled a bike from scratch, you should really consider paying a shop to do it.

Let me know how it feels to lose control going down a rocky trail. It is a lot easier to push the walmart special past its limits than it would be to a bike shop bicycle. Also, you really need to consider the assembly crew at the department store. Most (not all) don't care and throw these together without thinking. You're much more likely to get bicycles that are not adjusted properly or have loose nuts, bolts, or pedals when you buy from a department store. Also, going through a bike shop, you would at least get a few free tune ups out of your purchase.

hey hey hey! Don't be messin' with my GT. I've got the Ruckus. It is cheap and rugged enough that I don't have to worry about it at all. I'm afraid to ride my road bike because of my weight.

Here are two from my fleet...

    both great bikes!

but yeah, i kinda forget that noobs may be a bit intimidated by building it themselves... I'm so used to doing it i no longer consider it a technical skill!

and i have been a walmart assembler, and holy SHIT did some of those people do a dangerously shitty job building those bikes.

they started hating me. i did a good job, had a great attitude and the customers asked for me by name. because they knew if our bikes werent right for them, i would find them the right bike in a bike shop nearbye... and I usually already had the price for any bike they could think of in my head.

but that was afew years ago...

dammit lentsh!!! now I'm getting nostaligic! I need to buy another bike!
