Mounting a holster on the steering column?

I recently bought a Phantom Quick Draw holster for my handgun. It’s a magnet holster that holds the handgun handle-out so you can chamber a round quickly. Should have looked at the truck before clicking “buy”. It mounts by 4 screws on a flat surface....which is tough to find in a 2016 Tacoma under the steering wheel. That knee-level airbag is down there and I don’t want to screw anything near that thing.

The only place I found that would work with this holster is directly under the steering column to the right of the adjustment lever...right between my legs. Not in the way of any airbags. I’ve uploaded photos of the exact spot and with the mount.

Does anyone know what’s directly behind here? I need to screw this in and don’t want to damage any wiring or airbag-related stuff.

    Thanks, in advance!

That entire piece pops off very easily. Turn your wheel so you can see the two screws. Take them off and pull down.

One of these days I'm gonna install one of the gun magnets down there.

I have a regular magnetic pistol holder mounted on the center console right next to my right leg. I like it quite well.

No offense sir, but the firearm belongs on your person, with a round in the chamber.

Pros and cons to both. When I'm seated, behind the wheel, drawing from iwb is slower than grabbing a pistol tucked between seat and console, or stuck to a magnet under the steering wheel.

I would consider the proximity to the airbag also. That gun/mount could become a projectile aimed at your groin.

I velcroed a cheap holster in console for my "truck" gun. I'm not concerned with it leaving the truck while I'm not near, work and live on military installation, yes it's allowed depending on location. I wouldn't mount anything near the steering wheel due to airbag. Maybe like said above to the right on center console may be an option or on person depending how you carry

Unclip your gun with holster. Place between parking brake and center console. Does that work for anyone else?

THIS ^ is correct, as a former LEO, suggest things to consider; where will the firearm end up if you are in an accident, what if I need to get out quickly with my firearm, what conflict or “alarm” will I present if I exit the vehicle with a firearm in my hand vs concealed or in a hip/thigh holster? If you are carrying, also suggest the firearm be in a ready to fire mode, i.e., round chambered (you’re not on a TV show, racking a round takes time)...

OP. Excellent location in terms of access and concealment. Bad because for some reason the powers that be thought we needed an airbag for our knees. So I would look for a different spot.

Side note: I love how every gun carrying post turns into a political/moral/social debate by page 2.

    No shit!

Personally, if there is a srs knee airbag I would not mount anything in proximity to it.
