Personal safety is about setting up and maintaining situational awareness. In the above situation, park in an open and well lit area if possible (under a street/parking lot lamp)... don’t walk in between or near/close to other vehicles, stay in the center of the parking rows (driving lane), giving you as much empty space between you and an assailant as possible. Objective is to maximize reaction time available... keep vehicle key in you hand (it to can be a weapon, and also prevent wasted time searching or finding the key/fob while standing at the vehicle door). I’m sure you all know these preventative measures... just maintain SA at all times, even when just walking down the street...

I’m sure most have seen this video... great example of someone NOT maintaining his SA... expect the unexpected:

Just my 2 cents... The best place for a weapon inside your vehicle in my opinion is on your person. Drawing quickly and safely comes with a lot of practice and repetitive motions over and over until it becomes second nature. Trying to open a center console/glove compartment to gain access or reach for a gun under the steering column while accessing the situation and keeping your eyes on the threat can be challenging. Specially if you don't practice or train regularly drawing your weapon from that specific location and going hot. If given the chance I prefer to quickly get out of the vehicle where I have more mobility. I can create space/distance or find cover and engage the threat. If by chance I do get out in a hurry I know my weapon is on me and I don't waste valuable time trying to access it. If I can't get out I'm confident I can fall back on my training draw quickly from that sitting position inside the vehicle and challenge the threat without ever taking my eyes off of it. My suggestion is for everyone to train for these scenarios. Drawing from your person, the console/glove compartment wherever and be honest with yourself. See what works best for you.

Again just my 2 cents there is no right or wrong answer its just what works for me. Everyone please stay safe and train like you fight. Our families depend on it.

Are you left handed? That isn't goingto help at all if the attacker opens the door.

I’m kinda ambidextrous and once the 4R goes into drive all the doors automatically lock and stay that way until parked and shift lever is in P or I manually unlock the doors.

Also...in CA so irrelevant at this juncture

Ah to live in Texas. You get out of a vehicle with a weapon out here in CA. and you're the criminal. But my retirement is coming up and I intend to resolve that situation.

I am in the same boat as the OP. I had the Phantom mounted on my Kia with no issues since it does not have knee bags :) Now, I have no choice on mounting the Phantom in the Taco so I am goin with the "Ironclad Rubber Coated Gun Magnet" from Amazon instead of the keeper. I have an 43 mile drive each way to work and I carry IWB at 4 O'clock. The G43 is no issue but the G19 starts to dig into me some times.

    Recon,
I'm a little slow. It looks like the slide is in a channel that holds weapon, but the links look like just flat magnets.
Can you help me understand what I'm looking at?

he has a phantom gun magnet. i also have the same gun magnet.

i couldnt find a good place to put it in the 3rd gen so i guess ill just hang on to it. The best thing i found was a kydex holster with a clip that locks into the side of the seat. Near impossible for anyone to see it with the door closed and easy to get to if needed. I can shoot equally terrible with both hands.

Yea. I can see how that might be misleading. The link is for something I tried to replace the Phantom, which is what you see under the steering column. I have since bought the Glock 43X and carry that while driving with no issues. I’m liking what Auskip07 has.

Auskip07, could you post the link to that holster? I’m guessing it would need to be a left hand draw holster as well?

@ReconMarine @auskip07 Thanks. I've been trying to figure out a good place to keep my weapon when I'm on the highway. Pretty much everything is a compromise.

The loop in front of the pistol can hold an extra mag or a small flashlight. I have the same holder in my Wife's 4 Runner. Be safe guy’s. Holder came from Amazon

I'm too cheap. Had windows tinted and wheels installed 2nd day and that is IT. Will have to get a trailer hitch soon.
fwiw... a few days ago, I accidentally discovered that the heavy-loop industrial strength Velcro that I use for attaching helmet-cams, etc just happens to snag rather tenaciously to the carpet in my 2019 Taco Access. You only need the sharp, painful side of the setup as the truck carpet is perfect for the soft side. So far I only have the electronics strip attached but I'm sure you can imagine what the next strip of Velcro will be used for. I bought a 15 foot roll of it from Amazon and I'm burning through it as I keep finding new uses for it.

I'm hoping the molle panel that mounts to the side of the center console that I have coming has enough room to mount a holster to it
