Has anybody come up with a good way to mount a rear facing dash cam without attaching it directly to the back glass? Bought a Blackvue and back window is tinted. I don't want to have any problems with putting 2 side tape on the window tint so I was wondering if anybody has come up with some sort of bracket or a better idea.

I didn't want two sided tape on the tinted glass either. I am using a suction cup mount on mine. It came with the camera and was actually meant for the front facing camera.
I am using the go-pro mount on the front windshield for that one.
So far (after almost a year), the suction cup has worked just fine.

Do you tint the rear window or are you talking about the OEM privacy glass?
If you didn’t add additional tint to the rear windows, than double sided tape is fine as the privacy glass isn’t tint, it’s dyed glass.

Someone on here did a home fab metal mount because he wanted it centered over the sliding glass. Haven’t a clue which thread it’s in though.

No the back glass is tinted over the factory colored glass which is why I'm asking. The tint has a lifetime warranty which I can't imagine they would back if I put 2 side tape on it.

I was thinking of something like that. I couldn't be too hard to fabricate a simple bracket out of a stiff piece of metal and attach it between the roof and headliner, maybe attach it to the roof panel with JBweld or the like.

Get a small/thin piece of roof flange from Home Depot ( roofing material ), cut it down to a size you need, kinda sorta shape it to fit the contour of your roof, put some automotive double sided tape on it, squeeze it between the headliner and the roof, then stick the tape to the roof as best you can. When you re-attach the headliner, it will help jam the flange into place, keeping it secure.

A few notes on my experience...

    1) Do several test fits with the bracket ( without the tape attached ) to get as close to the roof contour as you can. I pulled the headliner down a bit to be able to feel what contour I needed.

    2) Make sure that when you cut the flange down to size as a usable bracket, you leave enough sticking out below the headliner to be able to attach the rear camera.

    3) Paint the bracket flat black so that it kinda/sorta blends into the rear, but leave the spot that will attach to your camera unpainted so the camera can attach better.

Here's a photo of mine without the camera attached.

Have Blackvue and tinted rear glass, mounted it on the tinted rear glass with no issues. If it has to come off, I'll pay the $20 it cost to retint that part of the back glass, but so far in 2 years I've not needed to remove the mount.

Oh, and another recommendation. Whenever you're working on that bracket ( test fitting, etc. ), make sure to have that center glass slid open. That way, you reduce a risk of scratching the tint.

Here's mine, it's not centered but I didn't want to see it when I'm driving. Camera is a Aukey DR02D.
