While it’s awful to hear that such a thing happened, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s ridiculously rare. I don’t concern myself with anything that has that low of a risk. You could spend the entirety of every day taking precautions against all the bad things that have greater than zero percent chance of happening. And it would be completely irrational.

Op is trying to get a mummified mouse. It is not a low risk proposition. Unless he can ID it as a No risk.

Don full hazmat suit inc'l CBRN gas mask.

Use a biopsy needle or probe to take a dry biopsy, double-seal in approved Level 5 bio-safety container, forward to laboratory for testing. Wait for negative results / no hantavirus before proceeding.

If tests positive for Hantavirus, I say you nuke the place from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

You’re being fucking ridiculous. “The risk of acquiring hantavirus is extremely rare, even among people who are consistently exposed to mice and other rodents.” — Washington State University

    Stop it.

Can it be compared to STD? Pretty rare if no encounters, right?

So let’s follow up our idiotic hyperventilation about an incredibly rare virus with an idiotic analogy by comparing it to STDs, which, are pretty significantly prevalent in the adult population. Like 1 in 8 adults has caught a case of herpes. I can’t even count the number of places you’d have to move the decimal in that comparison. But hey, fuck statistics right? If it’s greater than zero we gotta do something about it.

By the way, it’s not a mask that’s recommended to prevent hantavirus, but rather a NIOSH-approved respirator with HEPA filter cartridges. That’s for people who are cleaning up huge rodent infestations in closed spaces. You know what they recommend for people dealing with anything smaller than that? Gloves.

So, why didn’t you recommend the respirator? Honestly a mask isn’t gonna do shit.

From the article, at the end:

"People who need to clean out dusty, abandoned spaces should wear long sleeves, rubber gloves and a heavy-duty mask. Instead of sweeping the dust and potential mice droppings, one should wet the area with a bleach-and-water solution."

So there ya go. Just soak the remains of the dearly-departed in pure bleach for 5 or 10 minutes and spray it from time to time during the extraction.

If one starts to dig deeper into the hantavirus stats certain interesting & useful tidbits become clear, such as >94% of cases the past 20 years in the US being diagnosed WEST of the Mississippi. With a particularly high per capita incidence in the Four Corners area.

So, like, what is your point? Are you oblivious to statistics? Here’s another horrible death from an even more rare virus (if that’s possible), so watch out for red voles. Make sure you mask up if you find one dead in your frame because this one poor fucker died from it and so you probably will too:

from same article about a cancer patient….^

“He also regularly hunted small mammals which frequently scratched the patient, officials said, and in one intance, suffered one notable scratch the month prior to his rash onset.”

Too bad the mouse was not still alive... If he was, I'd cover him in woolwax, and make him run around inside coating that boxed in section from the inside.

Id give him snacks for his trouble...
