    Hello all,

I'd like to relocate my data + power usb from the stock location, to up top on the dash behind my phone mounts on top of the head unit so I can use a shorter cable to power my phone while still having car play etc etc.

I looked around for a day or two and found a lot of shoddy 12v usb chargers that according to reviews only deliver a portion the volts they should. At this point I'm not really sure what I should buy or be looking for. I'm not super well versed in wiring so I was hoping for a simple plug and play with a little dash cutting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not really what you’re looking for but I found a cable with a 90° end that is about 6 inches long. Allows for the phone to sit on the charge panel……even though the charge panel is worthless

My game plan is to use this plug:

    And something like this plug:

Top make everything work. Hopefully it goes well as I'm not really sure how well all these usb to usb connections will hold up plugged together behind the dash.

You just need a male to female extension. I hid mine behind the radio and made a hole in the top of the dash and put a cable through there

The data cable isn't a USB at the back of the plug, I thought i needed to plug into the harness to extend it.

Just plug the cable into the USB port itself. It's just a data port. Port goes behind the radio then put another switch or blank in its place

Just in case anyone looks this up in the future, this works pretty well. The cables all worked together perfectly and the cable from ali express plugged right into the head unit and worked no problems. I got the shortest cables i could but still wound up with some coils of extra cable stuffed behind the head unit.

The super genius person I am scratched the dash up a little which was a little dumb but other than that no issues. Drilling the hole was probably the 'hardest' part.

Only issues I would note would be:
    • Make sure you pay attention to which way the flush mount USB is facing if you go with an angled USB A cable. I forgot that step and it's pointing to the passengers side.
    • And make sure you properly secure the USB to USB connection with some electrical tape or something similar to stop them from wiggling apart.

    Reversible USB a exists

But it seems like you could probably just turn the input around

That cable looks cool, but a little too long. Can't seem to find a shorter version. I was thinking about turning the plug around but it's going to be a huge ass pain to get it back out of the hole.

You can disconnect the female end of the data usb from the switch plate in the dash. Then just use an extension to move the terminal end wherever you want. This is what I did to move the data cable up to my DMM phone mount..

My beef with the data port is it is a low power port, meaning slow charge to the phone. Don't know why they couldn't/didn't make it quick charge I'll never know. My plan is to go with something like this instead and run a QC power adapter to the phone. My current phone isn't compatible to the wireless charging feature that i hear doesn't work too well anyway.

    Because it's a data port

Doesn't mean they couldn't have provided a higher power capable device. The wiring is the same either way. It's the ability of the charger to sense what the to be charged device can handle. The data lines could care less.

I've never had a problem with the charge speed of the USB port. Playing music and using GPS it still charges decently, especially over a longer drive. You can rewire the stock USB port to quick charge if you move the data etc to somewhere else. That's my plan, going to change it to charging only now that the data and power for my phone are up top.
