My 17 has been great over the 18 months I've had it. That said, I came from a car and if I had a truck then, I'd have kept it because it's cheaper in the long run to keep what you have until it falls apart.

I had an 05 DCLB that I liked pretty well, went to an 09 DCSB OR that I absolutely loved. My 16 DCSB OR was a big disappointment to me, but the 20 Pro has exceeded my expectations. I would say get a 20 or keep what you have.

Don’t miss my 2nd gen at all. I have zero complaints with my 18 pro. If you never got on this site you would have no idea of the “problems” guys have with these. Mine actually shifts great, has plenty of power, and looks awesome.

You should know nearly half the people here in 3rd generation nitpick the shit out of things. Like any other vehicle the 3rd generations aren't perfect, but not near as bad as instanetz says they are.

06 DCSB sport 6MT to 16 DCSB OR 6AT. No regerts. My 16 was way more refined than my 06. I do have OVtune and some other minor upgrades, and I plan on regearing. You can tell they tuned the drivetrain for fuel economy, which is great for 95% of users. My issue is highway driving at/above GVWR. Should be good to go after some gears.

The 3G's are an evolution...the chassis is virtually identical from my 06 but with more bracing. I like a basic design that has been tuned and tweaked for 10+ years (at my time of purchase). I also already knew how to work on it and had all the right tools.

To be fair to the 16 I referenced earlier, there was an 08 Land Cruiser between the 09 and it.

Limit your intake of third-gen TW posts if you can help it. Otherwise, it’s likely going to be home a solid truck for you. It’ll feel and be a bit different than what you are used to, but it’s all good. Enjoy!

Love my 17 DCLB OR. Only thing you’ll really need to upgrade is the tires.

The only thing you have to worry about is excess 3rd Gen whine in this forum.

Went from a 05 Trd Sport to a 17 Trd Sport two years ago, for all the ‘same truck’ comments on these gens I find the 3rd is quieter, better mileage, tows better, and has bum warmers..

    upload_2019-12-14_14-12-1.jpg

About the only thing I miss from my 2nd Gen is doing big drifty slides in the snow- traction control and stability control are having none of that nonsense.

Exactly why I just bought a 2015 and not 2020.

The DC rear doors are different. The AC rear doors are the same.

I agree though, the 2016-2020 Tacoma is as much a new generation as the 2014-2020 Tundra is. It was a pretty big mid-model change, but nobody should be calling it a new generation, engine change or not.

I passed my 2006 DCOR to my kid and drive a 2019 DCOR MT. I like them both; they are different feeling trucks. Try to get the tech package with the radar cruise. It’s unbelievable. The seats in the 2nd gen are way better. Pull the trigger, you’ll be happy.

So just out of curiosity what made the 2020 model so much better than the 2016? They're pretty much the same truck, just different trims and features.
