Great story, despite the twist you went through in NY :( and family always first, reasons why I haven't moved yet

My (current) wife, her parents, and I have been wanting to move out of CA for a couple years, but it wasn't until I found and started my brand new job, which is permanent work from home/anywhere, that we knew we had the freedom to actually move, since we are looking for very rural areas to move, which would not be near anything that would have any type of job I could work. As long as we can get internet, we will be good to go, with my new job :). My parents are both passed on, her's are both still alive, and it is very important to both of ous that we stay as physically close to them as we can, they are both in their late 70's now, so we may need to be able to help them out in one way or another at some point in the not too distant future.

When I was 25 I packed my truck and drove to Colorado. I spent 3 years ski bumming, probably the best thing I ever did. I grew up a bit and moved home to go back to school.

It’s nice living near family, but PA sucks. I’m ready to sell my house and move again. I have kids now so unless I get a trailer I m gonna need a plan this time.

    Living vicariously through y'all.

I grew up in North Texas. It isn't a bad place to be, except that its crowded as hell nowadays. That's mostly thanks to a lot of you here. :cookiemonster:

After college I spent 12 years in Houston, and after the divorce I was ready to go anywhere, as long as it was new and had a decent quality of life. (Houston has good restaurants and fuck-all everything else. Terrible place to live, unless you enjoy eating and yelling at eight lanes of bad traffic.) I started researching New Mexico, Tennessee, North Carolina pretty heavily until I got a phone call from a headhunter. They wanted me pretty badly for a new job.... in wonderful North Texas. :frusty:

One of these days I'll escape.

Similarly, my wife's parents have passed on (2005 and 2013) and mine are still here but starting to need a little more here and there. My job is WFH and it recently became possible to get permission to leave the state depending..which would be attractive if I move to a cheaper state, plus being able to live mortgage free. Tried to talk my parents into Florida but they refuse to leave, which I get b/c my sister has the grandkids her. Ideal situation is if we do that my wife can retire at least from her current gig.

I feel this. If I wasn't married with a kid I would be living in my truck somewhere near/above the snow line

Jump all in and go for it!

Wife and I left CA do to the prohibitively expensive cost of living. Kids were older. They stayed back. Luckily we had jobs where we were able to transfer. Zero family where we were headed. Packed up, sold the house and headed TX like so many others from CA.

First year was up and down as far as what we expected. We had times where we missed having family nearby. But we survived, her and I and the pups. I’d still say best decision we ever made. We’ve taken more vacations in the 5yrs since we moved than in our whole 15yrs of being together prior. We’ve made new friends, lost a pup along the way and gained another.

Don’t ever live with the “what if”. :notsure: Good luck!
