I'm no expert on Ontario politics but wasn't the power plant fiasco a legacy of the McGuinty government ?

Just a thought. NS is not the best place for jobs. You may want to consider GTA for that.

Also before you invest in property, it might be a good idea to sort out the legal issues if not done yet. You need to apply for permanent resident status - not sure how that works exactly, but it might take some time. :( Without that you will not be able to work in Canada. Also to have a medical you also need to be a PR.

    Cheers.

i have no idea how immigration works either, but the north is full of mostly German, Swis and Austrians that seem to have arrived and stayed, simply by purchasing cabins or acreages. Don't think they want Canadian Citizenship so they can take advantage of all the great medical services and other social benefits in Germany. They then become pretty vocal with the "not in my back yard" scene.
Many also seem to be running some kind of tourist related underground businesses.

My point being, go ahead and visit, then don't leave. Sort of a permanent tourist visit.
The west or north is the place to be for wheeling/hunting/fishing.

Canada would welcome all the Americans that want to come here, with open arms. We already did that during the Viet Nam War. The biggest problem for most Americans isn't politics, its guns. Canada doesn't allow citizens to tote guns around unless you're in the back woods hunting, especially hand guns and assault rifles. The culture here is pretty intolerant of guns, in general, so any American settling in Canada would have to realize that its a big, big change from the US. No hand gun under the pillow, yikes, how would you guys be able to sleep at night?

Don't believe everything you hear on the news. I live in arguably the most conservative "gun loving" state and rarely ever see anyone carrying except LEO. And I have absolutely no fear of my fellow law abiding citizens that have carry permits. I also respect other countries decisions to restrict gun rights and would not consider mocking their laws. But no Canadian would do that because I understand from this thread they are incredibly tolerant and respectful of other cultures.

I have family in northern Alberta, I've lived there off and on and spent a few winters there. I've also traveled the trans Canada Hwy from beginning to end, so I've seen all the province's that share a border with the US. If I were to move to Canada, I would look at Western Alberta or BC. I love to hunt, fish, camp anything outdoors and have similar values for raising my family. Nova Scotia is nice and peaceful but doesn't hold a candle to the Western side of Canada. Just my .02 hope it helps, that's a big decision. Good luck with it!

Quite humorous. As others have pointed out there's good and not so good about both countries. Last time I checked though there's a lot more trying to get into the US than out. And ironically (I think) Central America appears to be the preferred locale for US expatriots.

Considering that the oil recession has hit Alberta HARD, so hard that even the Newfies are moving back home.. moving to Alberta on a visa and expecting gainful employment is a fair stretch of optimism these days.

This is very true, I actually meant to mention that in my post. That was a huge part of the economy in Alberta. Better learn to drive a log truck lol
