I was looking around at different places. Digby looked and sounded nice. Still searching, but figured I would throw out Digby as one of the places I researched.

Winters in PA are likely colder - NS is a temperate maratime climate. yes they get snow but that might be followed by a few days of above freezing temps.
I lived in NS for three years. Fantastic place.

Moderate temperature, never more than 1 hour from the ocean, very friendly people and living is easy. License plate says it all - Canada's Ocean Playground - come on up for a visit and bring your camping gear.

Kingston Ontario is the penitentiary capital of Canada pretty much. Always seem to be hiring corrections officers if you want to keep in the same line of work. Winters not so bad usually, but humid as all heck in the summer. Bonus is there are hundreds of lakes within a few hours driving distance.

There is good and bad where ever you go, I guess if you are brining some skills with you job hunting will be easier. The east side of the country is very beautiful so is the west coast good people every where you go .Our country has plenty of its own problems as well probably all of the same ones to some extent. But i think you will enjoy it lots to see and do .On a good note our dollar is in the shitter good time to spend your american dollars up here.

    Gone over the Top..
One thing i have noted - the OP's intent to gain employment in Corrections.

Keep in mind that the corrections systems are different between US and Canada.. right down to philosophical approach.

Being a gung-ho American ex-military/ex-fed in Canadian corrections, might not be considered an ideal, good match.

Our Canadian prison system is two-tier. Provincially-administered institutions are for sentences of up to 2 years less a day, and for those awaiting trial. Federally-administered institutions are for prison terms of 2 years or longer. Each system is separately funded as either a provincial, or a federal entity. The federal corrections system is a relatively small portion of the overall Canadian corrections system. Intake prisoners are handled by detachment police personnel until transferred to a Provincial institution/holding facility.

Canadian corrections also has an emphasis of case management - with Corrections Officers playing an active role in that. As such, educational expectations for hire can include a university level BA in Psychology or similar. Federally - you can expect the requirement to be fluent in English and French. This would be a requirement for several Provinces also. 30 years ago, a community college diploma would have gotten you into Corrections.. now it's about as good as is needed for securing a Security Guard position..

It ain't all sunshine and clover in Canada .. east, west or centrist.. if you think your government is meddling, and that the VA system is switched off.. you ain't seen anything yet.

Any employer in the country, especially one with unionized employees, is going to have to justify to the government hiring anyone other than a Canadian citizen in order to sponsor a Yank to move here.

You can probably buy a vacation home with the right lawyer's help but moving here without an immigration lawyer and a company who needs your skills and can't find them domestically is likely a tall order.
