On Monday I will be moving from North Carolina to Waco, TX. I'll be driving my truck pulling a 6X12 Uhaul trailer. I have read the Towing bible. My question is, If I'm on flat interstate is it ok to put my truck into Drive to try to get a little bit better gas milage? I'm aware that my milage is going to suck.

Two years ago I made almost the exact same trip except I stopped a hour short of Waco. I have the 6 spd so I stayed in 6th unless I needed to go up hill and what not and then I'd down shift. I got 10-12 mpgs. My trailer was very heavily loaded down so it would walk a little behind me.

The drive will become flat as a pancake once you hit Texarkana.

Shit, depending on which way you go from NC it'll get flat as soon as you either hit Nashville on 40 or Birmingham on 20.

I've made the drive from WNC to East Texas so many times I can't count. I own land out there and also play golf in San Saba (sw of Waco) every year.

It honestly depends on how heavy the load is. But as long as your on flat ground it should be ok. What you want to prevent is the truck having to shift out of OD on its own while pulling a load. If it has to shift out on its own then you should have been in 4th already. So just shift down to 4th in anticipation and not while under any strain. Just my 2 cents..
