My 03 and me are moving to the beach. Pismo Beach specifically for those familiar with the dunes. We’ll be about a mile from the Ocean but on a hill at about 350-400 ft above sea level and there is a good chance I will need to park outside at night.

Is there anything specific I need to do for rust prevention due to being at the beach that would be different than rust belt/salted road areas?

Does anybody have a link to a really good walkthrough on what to do for rust prevention? I know I’ve seen one in my general browsing and reading the forum but I can’t seem to figure out how to effectively use the search function and can’t find it now thag I need it.

    Thanks!

    Congrats

If I had beach money, I would buy a new truck every year

Doesn't matter where that salt comes from. If you can keep the salt off of it, it won't rust.

    Basically; wash it. Thuroughly.

You can use something like that POR-15 stuff or whatever it's called, but keep in mind that the frames rust from the INSIDE out (usually), so you need to treat/clean the inside of the frame for best results.

Im moving from a low cost of living area and your statement is correct. I could easily buy a new truck every year (and probably new suspension and armor) for the difference in rental price. But that money is gone now so gotta keep this one safe.

Unless you are planning to dig the truck under sand, you have LITTLE to worry about. Like NOTHING. There is a reason why California cars are so sought after, they don't rust.

But if you are intent in some prevention, washing the truck after every beach trip is a good idea. If you want to go further, apply POR-15 in the undercarriage. That should be PLENTY.

Thats good to hear. There are a bunch of toyotas and other cool trucks around here. I’ve looked briefly under 1 or 2 without seeing anything horrible but haven’t really done a thorough check or asked around.

The guy I am renting from has a really nice fj40 and I think talking to him about that helped us get the rental.

Funny, my friend had a maxima and lived across the 1, in cayucos and the car rusted from being in the driveway. I bought it and it even had corrosion on wire connections.

An old boss lived on catalina up in the hills.... he kept his bicycles in the house at all times, and covered.... still rusted.

I had a celica in riverside.... no rust.

    Moved to los osos...... rust

I'm from FL. I lived right across the beach in Clearwater for 3 years. In CA, I lived 2 blocks from the beach in Downtown Ventura, north of Oxnard, where I lived for 18 months, before moving to Clearwater Beach. That's a total of 5 years of beach front living. I experienced ZERO rust on either of my cars.

One of my neighbors in Ventura, had an original big block 71 El Camino, with zer rust. My roommate in Ventura, had a 1968 Nissan Fairlady Roadster and a 1991 Toyota truck. The truck had Zero rust, the roadster had some rust in the rear fenders.

There is a shop in Oxnard, just 6 miles east of the Navy base, not far from the PCH. I suggest you go there, and see all the rust free 70's El Caminos and Rancheros, just sitting there, about 30 of them. It's close to the carrot and strawberry fields. It will blow your mind!

Back when things were made with pride and paint sprayed thicker than tissue paper?

And ZERO rustproofing, whatsoever. Considering that U.S. cars did not get factory rustproofing until the mid-to-late 80's...

I've had vehicles that lived close to the Santa Barbara and Ventura county beaches. There are rust issues, but it's not like back east where they salt the roads. Well unless you actually get your truck in the salt water. Then all bets are off.

It's not the frame that is the issue. The problem is that essentially every single day the body gets completely soaked with condensation if left outside. If there are any imperfections in the paint the rust will start. Mostly a problem with older vehicles. If kept inside a garage it is a lot less, but not zero. Even a car port with a cover helps.

It also depends on exactly how close to the water you are. If you are right on the water it's much worse. Probably a salt contribution. Even just a few hundred yards in land makes it better.

I would just get into a regular wash routine, like every Monday after work or something.

My buddies down south that are commercial fisherman that launch boats in and out of salt water and run on salty beaches and live right on the water all paint inside of their frames and body panels fenders doors interior roof etc, with 90 weight gear oil
    Amazing how well it works
    Nice aroma too!
