Random question but I can't really find a solid answer online:

My mail currently gets delivered through a slot in our front door. I want to put up a curbside mailbox by the road. I saw the USPS has guidance on mailbox's (6-8" away from curb, 41-45" tall, etc.). My question is, our mail carrier walks our entire street house to house. Am I allowed to just put a mailbox at the end of our driveway all will be good? I would say MOST other houses on our street also have front door slots/porch boxes. Am I to conform to what everyone else is doing or can I just move my mailbox?

The reason I want to do this is I am just trying to limit the amount of people who walk up to our front door/porch area. The way our house is situated you can kind of clearly see into our whole kitchen from our walkway and i'm weird and would rather not have people be able to do that. We have planted a big plant to block the view but it's growing slowly.

This is in San Diego if that makes a difference.

I think as long as it meets the guidelines, you're good to go. I would def see if your neighborhood has an HOA or other ordinance , etc about it though. Usually those are the assholes that are gonna stick it to you.

Being California... My guess is you'll just have to conform to what they want you to do. They aren't a fan of independence. :p

Ask the postmaster at your post office.

Yeah ditto about the HOA thing. They will sometimes have restrictions on mailboxes. Everybody in our community needs to have those fancy wood ones that look like houses. Pain in the ass when the snow plow/ mailman/ whoever ran it over two years in a row. Had to replace the 4x4 post and re-shingle the mailbox

I'd just ask your mailman, he's the one who would complain if it wasn't proper.
Just confirm it meets HOA standards.

No HOA's or anything like that. We are the home owners. Ya sounds like I just need to go to the post office and ask.

Yeah, I would do that. I just restored an old house that previously had not had a mailbox. In our case when we talked to the post office they had the mail carrier come out and put a marker flag right where they wanted it.

Even if no HOA your city or county may have restrictions. I had a city employee come out with a ruler to measure the height of the yard that my tenants failed to mow. Got a letter in the mail and everything

This is getting complicated. You should just ditch the mailbox idea and dig a hole for them to throw the mail into #problemsolving

I actually had to call to request permission to move my mailbox from one side of my driveway to the other. Took about 3 days because my local office is small. The guy on the phone was very specific with his questions. Although everything was common sense he still had to notify the route driver for whatever reason. I got the approval and set up my box through the guidelines and havent had any issue. Best to just call and ask.

My Grandma has a lakefront home in Maine, and until the late 1990s she used P.O. box at the tiny little post office; In about 1999-2000 or so, she put a conventional mailbox up, and it mounted on a wooden post/stud just like everywhere else in America...

I've seen those hanging mailboxes in her area though!
