I have a new 2021 Tacoma TRD 4x4. I am considering loading a bunch of mp3 files on to a USB stick since my phone does not have much space for music.

Does the system have to read all of the files (to created an index) each time I start my truck? I tested with just a couple of albums but do not want to use this method if having 100GB of music is going to cause a very slow scanning of my music each time I started the truck or unplug and reinsert the USB stick.

Leave it . Fast. Shitty thing is once you start the truck it read it as one file. You can't see each file or album Individually. It stupid.

I have a 256Gb SanDisk thumbdrive with hundreds of albums loaded. It works as well as my old iPod. You've got to get rid of all of the extraneous files and make sure the folders match artists. If you're not very organized with your data, it can be time-consuming to prepare the thumbdrive. I've heard that the stereo will only read the first so many files, but have had success using ALL of the music I loaded on the thumbdrive.

I have a 32gb USB stick of music, and the system reads the data very quickly on startup, takes maybe 5 seconds tops.

At first it didn't display the song name, but all I had to do was click on browse, then songs. After I did that the first time, it has displayed the artist, album and song that's playing every time.

I made a separate folder for each artist, and within that folder I sorted the songs by album.

Also, I eliminated extraneous files like Rhogur mentioned.
