The RAV uses a 3.5 liter V6 while the Tacoma V6 is a 4.0 liter.
The Tacoma V6 is the same one they use in the FJ Cruiser.

    RAV4 3.5 liter V6
    ---------------------------------
    Horsepower 269 @ 6200 rpm
    Torque 246 @ 4700 rpm

    Tacoma 4.0 Liter V6
    --------------------------------
    Horsepower 236 @ 5200 rpm
    Torque 266 @ 3800 rpm

    Tacoma 2.7 Liter I-4
    --------------------------------
    Horsepower 159 @ 5200 rpm
    Torque 180 @ 3800 rpm

If you notice the V6 Tacoma puts out more torque than the RAV but less horsepower.

Thanks for clearing that for me.
For some reason I thought the RAV4 had the same size engine...

That is correct. The Rav4 uses a 3.5 liter V6 coupled to a high-range overdrive 5 speed automatic transmission. It is extremely smooth, extremely quiet, and extremely FAST.

You are absolutely correct on the aerodynamics and the weight. The Rav4 Sport V6 4WD GVWR is 4720. The Tacoma PreRunner AccessCab GVWR is 5250.

The 4.0 in the Tacoma is geared much more towards towing and hauling (higher torque than the 3.5). I got the 2.7 since I don't haul anything, and I mostly drive on the highway.

Are you running with Ethanol? I have been running on it and people say it does affect the performance. Also, see my post about ECU re-flash. Since you are seeing your dealer this Friday, check to see if it will eventually adjust to our own driving habits. In other words, it will keep on adjusting to the driver.

I am not running on ethanol, but I have notice that some of the stations around here have begun carrying it (Sam's Club now has 10% ethanol sticker on their pumps).

I went to the dealership (closest to my house, not where I bought my 007) to see about an oil change. They told me to come back when I hit at least 4900 miles.

I'm sorry. I am overprotective of my first brand new car (my wife's 06 RAV doesn't count - it is hers). I wanted to change the oil at 3000 miles to pickup any sediment in the pan.

In any case - I will talk to them again at the end of this week when I hit 4900 miles (yes, I drive that much!). I will ask them about the ECU reset, but I will not do it on my own. There is too much risk involved, and owner tinkering is not covered under the warranty. :)

I usually change it every 3000 miles. Dyno, no synthentic.

I did just have our Tacoma oil changed at 2800 and the dealer commented that they recommend 5000 intervals becuase it is easier to keep track and keep it on a schedule

Had not heard the engine break in thing.

On the mpg we just got 21+ on our Access cab 4x4 combination freeway and around town.

Trying to keep it under 70 but you almost get run over doing that in SoCal.

Same in Texas. Especially going down the long interstate stretches between Dallas/Austin/Houston/etc...

I am very good about keeping a lite accelerator foot, but I still need to go at least 70 MPH. My truck might be red, but they don't even obey stop signs round here. They aren't going to stop for my truck.

Ok, still frustrated. 5500 miles and counting, and I am still getting no better than 23 MPG (24 was my best). My wife wants me to take her Rav4 (avg 28 MPG/hwy) to San Antonio when I drive back and forth. That isn't what I got a 2.7L for - to drive my wife's car! I want to drive my truck!!!

Has anyone seen above 25 MPG on their 2.7L 4x2s? I am starting to think I should have bit the bullet and gotten a 4WD!

My truck is in the shop today for the clutch pedal so I asked about mileage. 14 city, 18-20 highway. I got the "can't do anything about it" speech. So I let the service manager know I am not happy about it in my hungover pissed off Sergeant mode. They said they will scan it for me. Why do I have to be a prick to get people to do what they should have already done???????

With our 4x4 the best we have seen so far is around 22 mpg which was a combo of city and highway.
    I am happy with that.

Your mileage is decent for a Pre-Runner. Even though the Pre-Runners are 4x2 they still sit a little higher and have the bigger tires.
I am guessing the stripped down 4 cylinders would get better mileage but then again they don't look as cool. :D

That is sad, but I think your description of your attitude was kinda funny (hungover pissed off Sergeant mode). After they "scan" it, what do they expect to find? Good luck with that.

That is pretty good for the 4x4s. 23 MPG is supposed to be your top. Sounds like your truck is performing as expected. Congrats! :D

I guess I was just hoping that they wouldn't be basing the MPG Stats strictly off the Engine/Tranny/Weight numbers only. I was hoping that, even with the added height and the bigger tires, the PreRunner 2.7L still got what the base model got. I would really be happy with a consistent 24/25 MPG on the highway (no where close to the 28 it is supposed to get).

Normally in this situation I would change my tires to a more Highway/Truck tire, but I got the extended life tire warranty. That means that I paid for free tires up to 100,000 miles. The problem with that - they choose the tires, not me.

    Layman's terms:

Torque equals the PULL that you feel when you accelerate. The more torque gives you more pull.

...surfponto's explanation is much better, but that is what I tell people when they ask me the difference between a gas and a turbo diesel engine of the same size. :)

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Great info from everyone, however, lets consider how MPG ratings are done, in 2008 EPA mpg tests will be conducted very differently and will reflect more "regular, i.e. factual" driving. The older current EPA mileage test are screwy, some of the tests are done with a ambient air temp of 68deg and some driving tests are at 25mph. Not real world scenerio's, as vehicles have to operate in sub zero weather and opposite extremes.
I think there was an article in R/T or C/D in the March issues.
