MPG - anyone with this set-up or similar?

    Reg. cab, 4X4, 2.7, manual, 4.3 rear, 265/75/16. Any ideas what to expect as far as mpg? Run 65% hwy miles and I'm a conservative driver.

    Previous Tacoma was an extra cab 4x4 2.7 manual with 3.42 rear and 235's in place of the stock 225 tires. Consistently got 23 mpg in a mix of 65/35 hwy/cty driving. At times over 24 and once got a full tank run of 25 mpg out of that truck.

    Dont expect 25mpg. Alot of guys i know say the best they got was 21 out of the 2.7L 4x4. Im pretty impressed that you were getting 25MPG with 4x4. Maybe it has alot to do with the difference in gear ratio.

    I would be surprised if you could even get 20 mpg with that gear and tire size. Probably looking around 18. Also depends on terrain. I had 2.7 and 358 gears and could only get 22 mpg! I do live in mountains and hills,country roads though.

    Complete OME kit w/ 881's and dakars. All-Pro Sliders, CB, HAM Radio and various other minor stuff.
    I'm averaging 21mpg on the highway with 265/76R16 and 3.90 gears, 2.7L 4X4 with manual. 4.30 gearset probably gives you great low end power but probably gets you in the low to mid 3,000rpm's at 70mph in 5th gear.

    I have that setup. Except the tires are 30x9.50r15 and I barely get over 40 mph. Averaging 24 mpg but less when I drive over that. Never less than 21.

    Yeah, might hit 3,000 RPM's at 70 mph but I'll never know since I don't have a tach. Also, the highway I drive everyday is 55-65 mph so I won't be hitting 70 anyway. So, with conservative driving and the speed limit, maybe that will help.

    With the 4.3's and the gear set up, you get from 1st to 3rd gears quickly. Can start in 2nd on level ground.

    2nd run of 356 miles. 22.2 mpg. However, this did include some extra hwy/interstate miles.

    OME 2.5,Tundra 17s,Falken Wildpeak AT3W hitch w/ 7-pin, ARE cap, JVC HU w/BT, HID/LED lights
    you will get the best mileage if you have "consistent" speed and no shifting. even at 2250-2500 it will be in the low 20's

    I'd say the 265/75R16 would be better on mpg since it lets the truck travel farther per turn (only by 1.2% but still better)

    I drive conservatively, however, I don't know the rpm's. Base model with no tach. But I can tell that I don't have it wound up when I'm driving.

    Those are some good numbers per tank. Keep it light and close to OEM and you have the mileage. Along with very good skinny pedal control.

    Have always been observant of the cruise control and where it has the TB blades at when on and pulling. Will reach down with my toe and check the position,,then gear down if the hill or highway section warrants it.

    I have a 1999 single cab 4X4 2.7 5sp with 265/75r15 tires. The one time I checked my mileage I was getting 23.8 mpg average on a full tank. I have no idea what the rear end ratio is or even how to tell. I don't do much hwy driving, it's 50 miles one way to work and I prolly go thru 30+ red lights/stop signs on the way. I am real easy on the gas pedal.

    '01 Reg Cab 4x4, 3RZ, 5-Spd, 4.30's, on 265/75/16. I'm averaging between 19 and 21mpg per tank and that's a 60/40 mix of city and highway driving. I don't usually rev over 3500 between shifts and I usually cruise 65mph on the highway.

    I have noticed no difference in mpg when o added the tube front bumper, 5100's and rear leaf packs. Also no difference with the fiberglass camper shell.

    Best tank was a 200 mile all highway trip on a cool night at 65mph that got me 26mpg.

    I also run mid grade fuel in the summer because it slightly pings on 87 octane when its hot as hell outside. (Texas)

    Update.....I checked my mileage over 2 tanks of gas and I got 24.9 mpg this time.....Maybe I'm getting used to the clutch. Damn I love my truck.

    To be honest I wouldn't expect more than 20-21mpg. I had that exact set up for a year but with the stock 4.10 rear end before installing my lift. I was normally calculating right at 18 mpg with 60% city driving. I am pretty conservative with acceleration as well. At 55-60 mph you may be able to get a couple mpg more but I find it hard to drive on any highway at that speed.

    '01 ext cab, 4x4, stock, 2.7L, manual, 4.30s open, SR5 (no TRD), 165k miles, 265/70r16 LTX M/S2s, fiberglass shell, original owner.

    I drive 70 miles a day on the freeway, but a lot of it in stop & go traffic. The route is straight and flat but takes 2 or 3 hrs depending on traffic.

    I usually get 22 or 23mpg; I accelerate really easy and try to keep it under 68mph. I run the tires at 30psi; if I do 26psi per the door I get more like 20 or 21mpg. I got 90k out of the last set of Michelin cross-terrain even though center wore out a tad sooner at 30psi; didn't even rotate them for the last 40k miles; Michelins man, they're hardcore... Anyway the fuel cost savings far out weigh the slightly reduced tread life; I drop back to 26psi for the early part of the rainy season for more grip on the slick roads.

    Seems likely the speedometer & odometer were not calibrated for slightly taller tires; the 75 series are about 3.3% taller than the 70 series, so just check the speedometer with one of those radar signs and the odometer with miles markers. (31.7" diameter/ 30.7" diameter = 3.3% taller)

    If they are off by that amount just multiple your mpg by 1.033 to compensate for it.

    This tire/wheel combo likely weighs about 50% more if you're have load "E" 265/75r16 than the 235s previously, hopefully they are not Es but they would still be a lot heavier.

    I'd say air up to ~ 30 to 35 psi if they are long wearing tires & see what you think. I'd like to hear how it goes, if you do it.
