The numbers you state as mpg is what I get towing in Vermont winters letting the truck warm up & using 10% 87 octane petro. Its consistant around 11-12 tracking via scangauge. Non towingmpg is consistantly 17 or so same winter conditions. v6 auto 27k if it matters.

Sounds like you are on the right track taking it to the dealer, many good suggestions from others here too. If you didn't know the fuel filter is not a maintenance item in the GEN2, part of the fuel tank or something like that. Toyota says it lifetime  If there is a problem, your warranty will take care of it, good luck Buffalo!

What are your true mpg numbers? '180-210 a tank' is a broad statement. That to 1/4, the gas light, or totally empty? Several tanks resetting your odo each fillup and miles/gallons is where you'll see your real numbers.
No harm going to dealer, hopefully you dont have an issue, just be sure they dont hose you with "$100 injector cleaning" or some other baloney to 'fix' your problem. At 15K, I cant see anything being so filthy that your mpg would drop by 40%. No matter what theres no way around losing 2-3 mpg in winter in upstate NY.

sry demon. Well the last two weeks from a full tank to a quarter tank ive got 140 miles and 150 miles, the 210 is when the light comes on but have had only 180 till light comes on. I told my brother bout my situation( hes a service guy for honda and was a service guy for pontiac dodge, he says theres nothing there gonna be able to do to it to get better mileage since its only got 15k on it. So am i gonna be wasting 4hrs at dealer??

I don't think you'll be wasting your time. There are things that an go wrong in the early years of any vehicle. Workmanship deficiencies pop up at any mileage. From what you said about the engine laboring to get up hills, I would think that something may be wrong somewhere. Lovely thing about modern cars: if something goes wrong with the computer, you won't have any clue.

i have the a 98 taco, 2.4l with over 255,000 mile on it, i have a 13.5 gallon gas tanks, i get around 24 to 30 on the high way. i punched a pipe threw the CAT, moded the stock intake, i also removed the stock fan and put on an eletric, just from doing that i saw a 2 to 3 mile gain to a gallon.

no your problem could be alot of things, bad gas, dirty fuel filter, clogged injector, needs a tune up, bad TPA or O2 or mass flow air sensor, all of this is really easy to fix, just get in a computer at Autozone.

does your motor ping alot? when try to get you speed up?

check the spark plugs too, if they are black you have more than a tune up problem, if they are tan or light brown then the fuel mixture is ok.

    i hope this helps

well just got back from dealer and they could not find nothing wrong! They said my (big)tires might have somethin to do with it. I said they have been on for over a year and there not big (265 75 16) Sooo they said keep checking tire pressures (dahh) and said i might want to change to synthetic oil for a little better mileage. But not a total loss i guess, they ordered the parts for the driveline vibration tsb and well be in a week, she said that will take care of your vibrations at least..... I may increase tire pressure a bit (35lbs) and might go to synthetic, but ill do the oil change myself, because i am not paying $70 for them to do it...

yea and i can trade my truck almost dead on for a ram same year. this is bs im so sick of getting 12 mpg. I bought an older camry just to afford to drive lol. I cant make it to work 1 week without filling it again before the week is over. I only get 201 miles per tank and thats till almost empty.

Another 11-12 mpg. Damn, whats in the gas in W. NY? 4wd, cold weather, short trips, in all stop and go, could maybe see that happening, but you guys are a full 6 mpg worse than I and others around here are getting only 100-150 miles away w/ similar weather.

What about hwy trips? Imgine you both have the auto too, would think no reason you shouldnt see at least 18 mpg if you keep it under 70.

Drive habits, i dont let my truck run more then 5 min in cold weather to warm up, im all highways 42 miles a day. I get 200 on good weeks to a tank, literaly when the gas light comes on. Truck has 24,000 miles new spark plugs, k and n air filter and a magnaflow exhaust. everything else is stock. Truck used to get 18-20 mpg now 12 all the time warm or cold weather. And im ready to trade it in on a big truck that gets better fuel econ.

Dude if that list is right under you sig.. you have an 08 Challenger.. why even BOTHER with the taco? :p

Seriously that is messed up though... try different fuel stations and such? They could be gouging numbers and ethanol ratings...

Also, might be worth while to invest in a scangauge... or maybe borrow one from someone to see what it's putting out.

Hi. Yes, I know this old but I'm having somewhat of the same problem so I figured I should just post here anyway.

I usually get about 300 miles for the whole tank (till the light comes on). For some reason last week I only had 230 miles. My driving and everything else has been the same. My cabin air filter may be a little dirty but is that something that can cause me to lose that significant amount? I just recently filled up again with higher octane gas and so far it looks like I'll be getting around the same amount as last week (230). Anymore input other than what I've read in this thread would be appreciated.
