Thinking a Manx Dune buggy would be really cool.

Should be inexpensive and it can wheel.

My daily driver is a 2018 Titan XD and I'm getting 13 MPG at best, also $70 a week for gas is getting ridiculous! I have a 93 Toyota pickup that I drive for grocery runs and short trips that I'm going to sell and buy a Prius or Honda Fit to commute in. I've tried using the 93 for my commute but it tops out at 60 and I don't want to get run off the road!

Buying a Subaru was one of the worst decisions I've made. After I bought an Outback my wife began driving it. Within a year she was a full blown lesbian.

Here's my $.02 worth (which isn't worth anything): Keep the Taco and drive it on weekends/vacations and when you go on road trips. Buy a cheap-ish commuter car that gets excellent MPG's (like a Civic or Corolla). I've been considering this myself because of gas prices. But gas prices do go down (and are, currently).

Like it was said before, the only way to get the real value out of your vehicle, is to drive it until it officially dies.

I feel very fortunate, my '21 TRD ORDC gets 19-20MPG all day, every day, and it's my daily driver; plus I live in Texas. Gas in my state isn't as bad as a lot of other places. My local Kroger gas station has 87 octane for $2.95

This was my other option. Buy a beater and drive it as a commuter. I do get 18-19 mpg, so it’s not as bad as I’ve read. I appreciate all the opinions, as I figured I wasn’t the only one considering this.

My vote is you just buy a beater Corolla from Toyota's golden years. See ad below for example.

    https://www.craigslist.org/about/best/hou/6565526716.html

For what it's worth, that Corolla will have as many creature comforts as your 2nd Gen Tacoma, so it shouldn't be a big change of pace

LOL! That ad is awesome. First off, the Title "1999 Toyota Corolla - Fine AF" (Fine As Fuck). Awesome. Then the ad iteself:

You want a car that gets the job done? You want a car that's hassle free? You want a car that literally no one will ever compliment you on? Well look no further.

    The 1999 Toyota Corolla.

    Let's talk about features.
    Bluetooth: nope
    Sunroof: nope
    Fancy wheels: nope
Rear view camera: nope...but it's got a transparent rear window and you have a fucking neck that can turn.

Let me tell you a story. One day my Corolla started making a strange sound. I didn't give a shit and ignored it. It went away. The End.

You could take the engine out of this car, drop it off the Golden Gate Bridge, fish it out of the water a thousand years later, put it in the trunk of the car, fill the gas tank up with Nutella, turn the key, and this puppy would fucking start right up.

This car will outlive you, it will outlive your children.

Things this car is old enough to do:
    Vote: yes
    Consent to sex: yes
Rent a car: it IS a car

This car's got history. It's seen some shit. People have done straight things in this car. People have done gay things in this car. It's not going to judge you like a fucking Volkswagen would.

    Interesting facts:
This car's exterior color is gray, but it's interior color is grey.
In the owner's manual, oil is listed as "optional."
When this car was unveiled at the 1998 Detroit Auto Show, it caused all 2,000 attendees to spontaneously yawn. The resulting abrupt change in air pressure inside the building caused a partial collapse of the roof. Four people died. The event is chronicled in the documentary "Bored to Death: The Story of the 1999 Toyota Corolla"

You wanna know more? Great, I had my car fill out a Facebook survey.
    Favorite food: spaghetti
    Favorite tv show: Alf
Favorite band: tie between Bush and the Gin Blossoms

This car is as practical as a Roth IRA. It's as middle-of-the-road as your grandpa during his last Silver Alert. It's as utilitarian as a member of a church whose scripture is based entirely on water bills.

When I ran the CarFax for this car, I got back a single piece of paper that said, "It's a Corolla. It's fine."

Let's face the facts, this car isn't going to win any beauty contests, but neither are you. Stop lying to yourself and stop lying to your wife. This isn't the car you want, it's the car you deserve: The fucking 1999 Toyota Corolla.

Corollas are like cockroaches.......They don't die. You have to kill them.

I passed our '07 to my daughter in '10 with over 100 kmiles, she put on another 70 kmiles, sold it to her friend who ran another 30 Kmiles then traded it.

I just did regular maintenance on it.

Can't believe nobody has floated this idea yet. Quit your job and get a new one that gives you a take-home vehicle! Then you don't have to worry about fuel cost, you get to keep your current truck and it feels like you're driving something new (to you). It checks all the boxes. You're welcome ;)

+1 for buying a beater Corolla for commuting. My buddies dad has one just for that purpose. An '09 with over 450k on it now, he bought it new. Still getting mpgs in the 30s on the highway.

I put a head gasket on it at 375k, there was still cross hatch visible in the bores. Otherwise it's only ever gotten regular maintenance. That damn thing won't die!

My son has a 2000 Corolla with 80k on it. It burns about a qt every 1500 miles, but I runs just fine. Had to replace rear brake lines and battery. The only drawback is that it has no cruise. It was $1200 with 65k on it 3 years ago. I want to buy his car from him.

go to https://www.fueleconomy.gov/ - compare vehicles - once in there personalize the data with your fuel prices; how much you drive; and city/vs highway amounts. then see how much you would save per year and compare that to amount you can sell it and buy another one. Also check insurance prices between vehicles as that can also make a difference. also maintenance costs too; if you do your own maintenance or another shop; which vehicle would cost more to maintain. For me I don't mind to pay a little extra on fuel for convenience of having a truck; and finding a good quality and low price maintenance shop to keep the vehicle in good condition.

Since the truck is paid off - buy a beater!!

A corolla or an civic/accord - find one that has been maintained and it will run forever!
