To be fair the 55mph speed limits back then really did help fuel economy. Compared to the 1980 HiLux, I bet the 2017 makes nearly 3x the power.

I'll lend a hand with that one... a full cord is 4x4x8 feet, a face cord is one row 4x8. Buy how long is a rod, a chain and a link? :turtleride:

Don't care about MPG, it is what it is. All I WANT to know is why my underwear twist.

Key to that pic is 59 mph.
I drove 242 miles today to see a test. Half the drive this morning was heavy fog on the interstate. I averaged 54 mph and got 23 mpg lol.
My underwear has three major holes: Two for the legs and one for the waist.
From an engineering design standpoint, the two leg holes located on one end of the aforementioned apparatus should be a functional anti-twist feature. I mean, if it only had one leg hole and one waist hole the underwear would twist like a summer storm in Oklahoma. However, even with this advanced anti-twist design of two holes on one end and one hole on the other end, I sometimes find the weenie flap twisted around to my hip, which is why I asked the question in the original post. I can explain most physics and engineering concepts but cannot explain my underwear twist.

Great article. I killed my mileage on my TRD offroad. Went up from 265/70/16 to 26575/16 that wasnt the killer. The killer on mine 2inch lift and shell. The shell was the biggest killer. Weight.

Thanks. The challenge is getting people to understand the article and how it applies to them!
I have learned (painfully) over the years that not everyone thinks technically lol. "Feelings" somehow trump logic and that drives me batshit.

well now at just 6k on my taco , I got the opportunity to spend about half of its current mileage breaking in the engine with a lot of compression braking … my 19.1 mile mountain commute now nets me right at 23.7 mpg per tank by the dash info … I'm quite happy with that , Now lets see how the weekends snow will affect that ! And I'm thinking with 4.56 gears and inch or so taller tires my gearing will be more practical … I hardly ever see 6th gear !!!

ON my Pro with Manual Transmission this is the highest I have recorded so far and on longer runs it has been consistently in the 18.7 to 23.x range

Might want to add that where you have the weight plays a big difference. Unsprung mass, especially tires, plays a HUGE role in making or breaking fuel economy.

The bottom line is speed and how you drive.
At 75 miles per hour, your mileage will be worst than say 60 miles per hour.
Tire size will also play a part. Stock vs
larger tires, wider tires, weight of tires vs stock. Region of the country, the South
where it is flat vs the North where there is mountains and hills. Off the line rabbit starts
vs easing off and traffic, small town vs
big city, stop and go, etc. Hot weather vs
    cold weather, on and on.
Wind drag, bed cover vs open. You can open a can of worms and plenty of arguments.
The gearing on these trucks have a lot
to do with MPG. Most folks with Tacoma’s
just accept that they not going to get the mileage as good as say my Hybrid Camry
which I also own. I can go from 47 mpg highway, 43 mpg city in my Camry, get into my Tacoma and it only gets 22.5 mpg highway. I just accept it for what it is.

This is a very good video that looks at the finer points of fuel economy. I found it particularly interesting that yes, lower rpm's are always better for fuel economy, but opening the throttle plate wider means the engine isn't working as hard to suck in air (lower vacuum) at a given RPM.

plus rotating mass. On a bicycle one pound off the wheels is approximately equivalent to 5 lbs on the frame. Rotating weight takes a lot of energy to maintain.
    How heavy are aftermarket wheels?

The thing I have noticed that make the biggest difference is stoplights and waiting in drive-thu lines. Totally kill mileage.
