Nope, it just depends on your outside diameter, width, weight of the tire and tread pattern of the tire(highway vs mud tire). The 17 inch wheels only weigh a couple more pounds usually.

    Agree, ideally you'd have light weight 16" alloys, with 245 75 16s (sr5 size) and an H/T tire. https://generaltire.com/tires/light-trucksuv/grabber-hts60

Running a steel 16" over an alloy 17" is actually heavier and worse for mileage.

Would say you need to weigh both sets of wheels & tires. Whatever setup is lighter should provide better fuel economy.

Either way you'll have to have a couple of digits to the right of the decimal point to see the difference. We're talking about the difference between 19.53 mpg vs 19.55 mpg here. You will never come close to saving enough on gas to offset the cost of any of the modifications folks try on their trucks. Including this.

Worrying about wheel/tire WEIGHT is a huge waste of time. If you want better fuel mileage stay away from tall, wide tires with aggressive tread and keep them inflated to the upper end of what is acceptable. After that your driving style is the key. And no matter what you do about 1-2 mpg either way is the best you can do.

If that isn't good enough then drive something other than a truck. We have an older Honda Fit in the driveway that gets in the upper 20's around town and upper 30's on the road. I drive it as much as possible to somewhat off set the extra fuel burned in the 2 trucks in the driveway.

At least now l can go further than 366.lt would’nt be much, but still great to know.318CD40D-9837-4A03-B699-F4ED418BB54E.jpg

I get right at 20 mostly with my 06, worst I have seen, pulling my Travel trailer on a windy day, 8.4. Best was a highway trip from Central Ohio to Buffalo NY, 22.9. Always keep records to fill ups and mileage, so these are over 10 years and 150K ish miles.

I can get 18-19 without trying too hard on my San Joaquin valley to LA basin trips. More if I baby it at the speed limit.

“Highway” could mean 80+ like a retard or 65mph left lane boomer.

Just like “city” could mean stop and go traffic or longer 40-55mph stretches.

I probably should have added that l was running around 75mph for most of the trip.Guess if l had run right at 70 it may have been a tic better. We also have an 08 Subaru Outback wagon and it doesn’t matter if you run 70 or 85 all day,we still get 29-30 mpg in it.Go figure..

Wow. I’ve been getting pretty bad gas mileage with my 2015 OR. Stock suspension w/ a hybrid low pro bumper that’s 75lbs. 265/75/16s. Gotta do the spark plugs which are due for, so hoping that will help. Could be winter gas?
I usually get to around 285 miles and my light comes on. Last year on a trip to Ohio (mostly all highway) I got about 340-360 out of my tank with truck fully loaded with camping gear RTT and bikes. That was my best ever

The weight of your foot is much more important than tires for fuel mileage

The outside diameter of the tire has more to do with fuel mileage than the outside diameter of the wheel. I have full sets of 16", 17" and 20" wheels & tires for my truck for different seasons. (16" snows, 17" OEM all-seasons and 20" summer tires) I was very careful to match the outside diameter of the tires to the OEM specs when I purchased them. Insignificant differences in mileage.

Ive even been babying it to see if that was the culprit. I drive 30 highway miles to work and tried keeping it at 70 with cruise control. Still 285ish when light comes on. What mileage do people usually clean their MAF?
