MPG improvements?

The stock tire size on a lot of these trucks is 245/75r16. One of the few tires available in both p and LT in the same size

 

For me the stock tire size was slightly undersized for the speedometer as in when it showed 70mph my gps was showing around 66. So your MPG should be about 5% wrong and show you much nicer numbers than you're actually getting.

My 4 cylinder was getting around 22 mpg average on 245/75R16 which is really 20.9 mpg where my 255/75R17 are getting around 20ish mpg so really I only lost around 1mpg real world going up slightly in size.

 

I was actually talking to my father about this the other day. My guess is that Toyota knew that was the only way they could get the best MPG out of this truck.

 

Speedometer and odometer sometimes read differently, they did on my truck and most definitely on my motorcycle (odometer is about right on my truck, but speedo reads fast). I'd do a distance run comparing a gps odo reading vs. the trucks odo over 50 miles to check the odo.

 

Is that for the 4cyl models? My 2015 TRD Sport had 265/65R17. Most people go to 265/70R17 since the 65 series side wall is very odd and there are very few tires in that size. Oddly enough, when stepping up one size the speedo is dead on. Even on the 16" models people generally step up one size for the same reason. Though that's 265/75R16. I haven't looked into the 245 trucks.

 

Definitely for the 4 cylinders, but I know the V6 sr5 double cabs came with 245/75R16's as well (at least they did pre 2012 facelift). I think only the TRD Sports/OR and up models came with 265's stock, but I could be wrong (happens fairly often.)
265/70R16's are within a 10th of an inch heightwise in relation to the 245/75R16's.

 

In that case, a 245 will likely see a small bump in MPG because they are generally a smidge lighter and less rolling resistance than the same tire in a 265. Of course that is just a generalization though. I've read the guys going from 285's to 255's (roughly 33" OD for both) seeing a small bump in mileage and ease of acceleration for those reasons.

 

12.5 - 13.5 mpg, wow, never been so happy to be a mall crawler (with a flavor of snow plowing)

 

Mine came factory with 245/75R/16 and I bought it with 245/70R/17s (matches the 245/75R/16 spare).

4.0L, automatic, DCLB with metal tonneau.

i notice no real difference driving <2000rpm vs 2500rpm on the free way. If it's an all freeway trip, even at 2500rpm, i will get ~20mpg

if it's driving around town, up and down hills, stop signs, i might get ~15-16mpg. even babying the throttle.

 

Somewhere out there, someone lurking this thread is trying this and not understanding what he's doing wrong.

 

From what I understand most motorcycles have the speedo read a little faster than you are actually going.

 

I noticed a huge difference in ride quality between my E load Firestone destination XT's and my previous E load BFG KO's, which felt like they were made from stone. Upon inspection, the Firestones have 3 ply treads and 2 ply sidewalls, while the KO,'s had 5 ply treads and 3 ply sidewall, which would explain their hard ride, puncture resistance, and weight.
