    I went through my 06' 4x4 access cab: I only use synth oil, including the front diff, rear diff, transfr case, and MT. I also use Moly fortified lithium grease in the u-joints and synth fluid in the steering pump. The entire power path from engine to wheels is "slippery-er". I increased my mileage by 2 miles per gallon.

    Where is the best place to find steps for your 1st gen Taco?? I also want to ask if 17-19 mpg all the time is good for a 4x4??

    I've looked at other yota sites...prefer this one. I have a 120# fiberglass cap on my 4x4 access cab...didn't change the MPG (probably because the cap smooths out the airflow...doesn't slam into the tailgate anymore). I consistantly get 16.3 fully loaded, 17.8 empty...looks like it's 18 MPG w/ the new Michelin XLT's all the way around...seem to roll easier, steering is easier...:cool:

    Just a note, while its been posted before, BUT

    I switched to high octane fuel, and noticed a significant gain in MPG from my first tank. Have not sat down and done the math, but am sticking to 91 from now on.

    Tnx for the link to abbrev terms. SOme I know, most I don't.

    Just for fun I'll run a tank or two of 91 octane gas...see if MPG improves.

    I use the AFE dry filter CAI. I read several places where the oiled filter messes up the MAF sensor over time. Dry washable filter...no problems. I clean the MAF sensor every 30K.

    I ran through two tanks of premium and didn't see any improvement - so I went back to 87 octane regular.

    TRD cat back exhaust, rain visors, limo tent on back pasenger windows and 35 percent added to back factory tint window. 35 on front driver and pasenger side. Sport pedals, all weather fl mats, roof rack, front skid plate , BFG ALL TERAINS including spare. ALL installed by dealer.
    This works for sure I have tried it. You will get a big difference in your gas millage keeping them below 2000. The slower you go the more you will save.:D Takes a few minutes longer to get there but you will be safer and richer.

    Excellent point guys. Thanks for reminding me. Lower RPM mean better MPG. For the sake of keeping the engine healthy and last as long as possible before being rebuilt, I never rev the motor above the peak torque curve - 3250 RPM, and only run up to 3250 while shifting. Since this is my only ride, I have to take care of it. 90% are highway/freeway miles, so I maximize MPG by staying at 2K RPM. Even on weekends when I head for the hills with kayaks, bikes, and pop-up in tow, I run the V6 at 2000 RPM.

    If your mileage didn't improve w/ high octane gas, then I'll skip the test and stay with 87 octane. :cool:

    Ya, rpm's really do make a difference.


    octane- I will have my numbers up later in the week, did a test on all 3 octane, i just finished my first batch of 91buts all i know is that i got over 650km's with my first tank with 91, for less than 70L's (about 75%hwy, 25city) and have never got that kind of numbers with lesser octane.

    Could be all in my head? I did not see a gain from 87 to 89. But you know, i just like how the truck feels on 91, and might even stay if my numbers turn out to be wrong.

    I would be very interested in hearing from someone w/ the OBD code reader...nuts, what's it called...sits above the rearview mirror...xxxgaugeII...anyway, using the data to the ECM to display MPG, etc. :cool:

    Last week i put in new denso plugs and an afe pro dry s filter and my mpg went from 16.5 to 18.8 doing about 50% highway and 50% city driving... i was really surprised by my results especially after my lift, bumper, and tires.

    kylefrdavis, welcome to TW! u may want to look into getting a dynomax super turbo muffler too! might help a bit on mpg.

    The heater switch bulb( switch to change from def to floor etc) is burnt out on my 2006 tacoma, How do I change it ?

    So does doing that charcoal filter removal really help your horsepower. i just bought my 2010 tacoma I4 2.7L and i am going to put a k & N air filter on it when i get paid. i want more horsepower and better MPG without spending an arm and a leg. This filter removal looks like a good idea. Will it matter that i am putting a k & N air filter on but taking the charcoal filter off??

    K and n are oiled and mess with your maf, just go with the proven and happy afe pro dry s

    And I didn't find any noticeable difference without the 2nd filter either... some more noise, not much else.

    Does anyone looking here have a scan gauge and still either have their secondary filter on or lying around and see if the scan gauge can tell and difference in power, mpg at say 65 mph or even throttle position at 65 mph?

    This is a reason I really want one to kind of experiment with these things but can't get myself to spend 150 on the device
