Synthetic oil/lubes used throughout. NGK Iridium Lazer 100K spark plugs. Rear differential breather extension modification. Toyota front skid plate, roof rack, bed mat, chrome exhaust exhaust. Runs like new!
I agree. I only get 15-16 mpg at 2500 rpm. (Stock 17' rims) My friend always did much better at 2000rpms w/fuel savings and I noticed the same. I noted in the past on here.

If people have the money ($1000's) to buy bigger rims, tires and other things that will decrease their MPG; you have no reason to complain. Just drive it!

Good write up here. My mechanic of 35+ years and my personal experiencestell me the same. They want $80 for a pro dry air filter. If I bought thefilter when the vehicle was new I would get my money back but at 72K miles (when I considered it) Iwould not save a penny. I would just assume buy a NAPA air filter at $10 each (discount/acct) every 10Kmiles which would give me 80k miles of no maintenance air filter, just replacethe old one. All synthetics I do just for longer lasting of all moving parts(motor, differentials, transfer case etc...) but personally did not notice any fuelsavings.

People waste thousands of dollars trying to save a buck on here. LOL Quitehilarious! Driving habits are going to save you the most gas, using cruisecontrol and I believe I would get better mileage if I had a bed cover which Ihave not purchased yet. There is definitely drag with an open bed/wind hittingtailgate. Egg under the pedal is good one!

The air filter interval is 30K not 10K, save even more money.

Lucas gas treatment every tank. I only have 3000 miles on this truck but have gained 2 mpg. Went from 17.5 to 20 mpg. When the filter needs changing, I'll try the AFE Pro-Dry. I work @ the Toyota plant in Georgetown, KY in the performance test for engines. Octane doesn't matter as much as if it contains ethanol or not. Ethanol can KILL your milage, but in some states there isn't an option.

I have a K&N and getting 21 MPG faithfully on the road. Don't think I'll get better than that. I've had K&N before, just the oiling is the pain.. How do u know how much oil to put on it without over doing?

I agree with thenrie. It's all in the computer. And if anyone ever came out with a code changer that actually works they would be millionaires. I had a 2011 V-6 4dr TRD Taco that got at best 19 on the super slab. So someone offered me lot's of money for it and now he owns it. And I now have a 2012 4 banger 4dr Taco that has much better MPG.
But, if Chevy comes out with an oil burner Colorado, adios taco on a drop of a hat.

don't forget to clean your MAF sensor occasionally!
Especially if you do any wheeling and/or have a K&N filter....after recharging those, some of the oil can dirty the sensor.
Just buy a can of spray cleaner (specifically MAF sensor cleaner)
I got at least 2+ mpg after I cleaned mine :D

I increase my gas mileage by not buying frivolous things like soda, candy, cigarettes, beer, pizza, etc. The money I save by not wasting it on this "junk" "increases" my fuel economy to the point - I just don't care about it.

On the other hand - if you want to improve your fuel economy change the differential gear ratio to 3:23

I know I'm labeled as a Junior Member......

But these are the new Toyotas I've owned
85 Tacoma X-Tra cab 4X4, 4cyl, auto. No AC drove across the country twice, lived in Hawaii for 4 years, took me through 4 years at NCSU. With 180,000 it only needed a new thermostat (Raleigh). That cost me $4.89 at the Car-Quest on Western Blvd and about 90 minutes of my time to change it. Probably the greatest vehicle I've ever owned.
