    Hey all,

Can anyone give me some realistic numbers for your 4x4's mileage in 2wd vs mileage w/ 4wd engaged? Is there much of a difference at all?

    Thanks a lot.

Maybe 1-2mpg. You tend to see a more dramatic change in 4wd because the situations that require 4wd necessitate a different driving style than cruising the interstate. The actual additional friction from the front axle doesn't kill the mileage that much.

some of this, a little of that
a couple of years back I spent over a week on 4wd during the winter, I averaged 14 MPG over that tank, so 2-3 less than what I usually get. Although this tank also had a lot of stop and go traffic and a fair bit of idling as well.

    17-20 highway and 14-16 around town in H2; 12-13 in H4; 10 in L4... or less.

However, my 4WD figures are estimates as I don't usually do a full tank all in 4WD or when I do, I am adding to the tank without documenting it well.

I am interested to hear of actual 4WD documented consumption figures!

    Great, thanks for the info.

So I assume epa numbers of 4wd trucks is based off of the truck being in 4wd mode, right?

Can anyone with a 4wd 1st gen Tacoma report mileage in 2wd?

?? What are the epa numbers you saw?

The sticker on my truck was close to what I get (16 city/ 20 hwy) with the stock tires.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
No, generally the EPA numbers are gathered under normal driving conditions (2WD), the only difference being whether the front drivetrain is turning idly (ADD) or not at all (FREE Wheel Hubs). I have free wheel hubs making my truck completely disconnected from the front drivetrain most of the time.

About 18MPG for the most part.

I must apologize, I surf TW using New Posts, and did not notice this thread was in 1st Gen. Tacos. While I am on my third Tacoma, it is a 2010. However, my 2001 got about the same mileage with the smaller 3.4 V-6 (although the truck was smaller too).
