MPG really isn't that different chinscoop/no-chinscoop so... what is your deciding factor?

good vid - good daily user facts: Here's What I LOVE & HATE About The New 2024 Toyota Tacoma After Driving It For a Week! - YouTube

    SR - nah.
    SR5 - maybe.
I thought the SR5 was gonna get ALL the colors... alas, no. it only gets the bigger powerplant over the SR. So what are you looking for in the Tacoma trims? For me it's now down to the color... and ya know... that hood scoop is growing on me, functional or not, and the packages available, definitely feeling those aux switches.

I really thought the chin scoop was going to show up making a bigger difference in MPG the way they were talking about it, and I thought I'd want to keep it around just in case since I do some long distance travel outside of the daily runs down the washboards for work/foods. Less that 90 seconds to remove it? easy peasy... 1 mpg to have some random chin skirt hanging in my garage vs having serious offroad capabilities I'll never use that will help keep its value up. heh. it's down to the color and price point. Definitely not going for the premium setup, but having heated seats and/or sliding rear glass would be nice to have.

This will be my first Tacoma replacing a longbed 91 F150 Lariat (rusted/retired to a farmer) and a mk7 GTI (daily) and it covers all my bases. I think having a Gen2 that keeps you REALLY happy, and a Gen3 that makes you happy may hold you for a few more years, So, other than color and price point (really hoping they start putting out 6 foot beds early/soon) what are your deciding factors here that would make you pick up a Gen4?

I'll save money, wait a few years, see what the economy looks like.
I can't justify paying that much money for something new when my current truck has given me 0 problems.

That chin spoiler fills the same role as a sabot on a shell. It changes the way the air hits the truck long enough to get it sold with a certain MPG, before getting removed immediately (about as fast as a sabot does once it leaves the barrel).

The designers didn't envision the vehicle with it when they drew the design, the marketers don't want to show it, and the person at the EPA probably knows it'll more often than not get removed and it would be more helpful to do the test without it. Everyone involved knows it's CAFE pandering.

And your giving the chin spoiler too much credit, TFL tested it and it only lost .7 mpg without it. I'm not impressed considering its mpg is being nipped in the heal by some people with 1st gen tacos. Every time the technology improves Toyota sizes the Tacoma up to keep its low 20s mpg rating they've maintained for nearly 30 years.

Yes, a first gen on 30” tires with 155hp makes close to the same MPG as a new truck on 33s with 1000lbs more weight and 120 more horsepower and 150lb-ft more torque.

    very much the same!

have you noticed that all of the midsized trucks get about the same mileage? Why isn’t anyone leading with a 27-30mpg midsize? The answer is that highway MPG is a function largely of aerodynamics, and we desire big tall blocky tough looking trucks on wide tires and torquey tough engines.

We don’t want low ride height, narrow, aerodynamic trucks with car like engines on small tires. Look at how real tough guys look down on the maverick and ridge line that do have some of those features. It’s not a matter of toyota not being technologically advanced, it’s a matter of following the market, same as the other companies (and really, the 4g Toyota is the most fuel efficient in the segment)

So what you’re saying is machismo guys who wanna look tough are secretly soft and squishy on the inside with their desires of a high mpg mid-size truck. So chest thumping tacticool on the outside, and frilly pink panties under all that. nttiawwt… :D

There is a way to have both…but I am not going to say it. :)

Think buying a new Tacoma is a buying a Tundra instead. :)

Here are a couple with heated seats, some have a 32 gal tank, moar powwah!, similar mpgs, 1885 lbs payload, 11,000 lbs towing, and a bunch of other fluff…

Not a big deal to me. You don’t see it when driving and and I hardly if ever notice the spoiler on other Tacomas passing by.

I would leave it on until it gets broken off. Might as well keep the mpg gain. I would have to take it off before driving on the beach though because it would be plowing sand all day.

Mpg means little when you end up costing more per mile. That’s the whole point of desiring high mpg

A low option 4x4 can be had under $40k in the new tacoma also. Why go diesel when the cost per mile is higher? Unless, I guess, you need 1000 miles of off road range or whatever SG will mention next

Nevermind that the truck you posted makes 110 fewer Hp and less torque than the 2,4t petrol we are getting

Range is a good thing, guess you like to stop often. Diesel also stores longer than gas, and safer.

Never cared about all out power, don’t drive fast.

I don’t drive fast, either, but towing with 155hp is a bear. Towing with over a hundred Hp more is likely far more pleasant. I couldn’t really care less about how long diesel stores. That’s never been a problem for me in any gasoline vehicle I’ve owned.

And again, most people want more MPG because it costs less to own and operate, not because they like a bigger number.

Towing is about torque not horsepower.

Nice thing about diesel is, you can make your own biodiesel. Can’t do that with gas. Toyota already has the tech to run 100% bio.

You can always stock up on diesel when the prices are low. And look, that work mate comes with a tray, perfect for hauling 55 gallon drums. :)

Nonsense, majority of people just look at the mpg numbers, just look at the RAV4 prime, premium price, higher cost of ownership. Yet dealers can’t keep them on the lot. While those buyers could have saved $20K right off the bat by purchasing a Corolla or Yaris if they are so concerned about saving money.

If you really care about cost per mile you should be driving a 90’s Geo Metro or stick with the old truck you already own. Buying a new $40-50K truck and talking about cost per mile is silly.
