I'm not the most experienced in the realm of getting good MPG with tires. My last truck was a 97 Cummins and it got 17MPG with 35s so I couldn't complain.

How big of a difference should I notice on the 3rd Gen Tacoma with 265/75/R16 MT tires? So far my average has dropped from a healthy 18 to a 15.9, been babying it trying for that .1, but also I've read somewhere these truck can actually adapt to a change to help it get the best MPG? Is this true?

Also what do you guys run on your tacomas? I'm at stock height and I know that makes a factor sometimes.

Thanks for anyput I'm new to the forum and I've heard good/scary things from Reddit.

Bigger tires = worse MPG. You'll probably lose 1-2 MPG. I went from 19-21 avg to a 18-20 going to the 265/75r16.

Are your steps factory? I've found it random that some come with them and some don't.

Little bigger equals a little less mpg. A lot bigger equals a lot less mpg. Easy peasy.

I have no idea what my initial MPG was when I got my truck. I drove it two miles from the dealership to my work and installed the 265/75/16's.
I averaged about 15.5-16 mpg for the first two tanks of gas and it has slowly improved, this last tank full I averaged about 17.5 in town with a manual trans.

ETA I just passed the 1K mark on my last fill up,getting right at 300 miles per tank

The bigger difference in that size shift will be weight. Spinning heavier tires up to speed will cost you MPG. Did you go with E-rated? Also if you go to E’s you might have to inflate to a higher PSI to get reasonable mileage.

Yes I do believe they are E-rated tires they are pretty heavy tires. Really makes you think about how a few pounds in the wrong spot can make a difference.

I'm still getting used to having a truck, coming from a Honda Civic that got 30mpg really spoils you to gas mileage.

What's this about higher PSI? How can I tell what is proper

Rolling mass has a much bigger effect than static mass. I can’t advise you on E-rated pressures, but I know other members here have discussed running e-rated Ko2s etc at higher pressures than the stock Toyota 30 PSI after doing a chalk test. Maybe someone who has experience can chime in? I’m still running the factory Wranglers.

For example, if the stock is calibrated to 265/75/16 and you upsize your wheels and tires to 285/70/17, your speedometer will be off 2.1 MPH at 60 MPH

Running BFG KO2's (265/70/17's) and have always gotten 18-20+ with my 16 SR5 DC V6 4X4. Live in the hills of Western NC. Unless I'm on the highway going better than 60, I use ECT.

I lost around 2mpg going from the stock wranglers to heavy ass st maxx's in 285/75/16

If you haven't re-calibrated your speedo, then you need to take into account the difference in not only speed but your ODO and MPG as well.

I have a 2018 TRD Off Road that has the factory 265/70/16s on it. If I go to 285s, how can i recalibrate my Speedometer, ODO, MPG tracker, etc...? Is that something I can do on my own or Toyota will do it for me or what?

I run C rated 255/75/17 duratracs. 60 miles a day, this summer I'm averaging 19.5-20MPG. My truck is a 6MT, slimline steel bumper, winch, sliders, tool box full of tools.

Go buy yourself a fat tire bike and see how much fun it is to peddle a 4.5 inch wide tire around vs your skinny bike. Wide, heavy tires kills your mpg/power.

Do you have any pics? I was interested in the same size. Also, was the 60 a day both highway & city? If so, that’s excelkent, you’re getting better than stock size.

Reddit is great for a lot of things but their car and truck subreddits are terrible.
