I know I'm gonna get grilled for this. I'm a fairly new member (under a week) and I've had my truck since last Saturday (4-14-16). I haven't even filled the gas tank once yet. To get straight to the point, I'm coming from a 2012 honda civic si with a k&n intake and tune and was used to getting 34 mpg on a good day and 29 in the middle of winter. I'm babying my double cab 4x4 sport M/T and am getting 21.3 average which is on the real high end of the spectrum but is there any way to help it even better? Flowmaster exhaust? K&N intake? Whatcha got? Go easy on me guys!

Further note: Yes I know I was going to get significantly lower MPG going to a 6 cylinder 4x4 truck. I not too concerned filling up the tank. Anything helps though.

    It's not a Civic.

21 MPG for a 4x4 truck is as good as you can hope from a Tacoma.

    Want more, still? Slow down.

Bolt ons will do nothing but empty your wallet and make your butt dyno calibration go awry.

Sounds good man. You're right about the bolt ons emptying the wallet. I'd rather spend the money on LED headlight bulbs and keeping my truck nice and clean.

Even the new motor sucks gas at high speed/high RPM driving.

On my truck, dropping from 70 MPH freeway to 63 MPH gained me 4 MPGs when I was stock, and I'm a 4 banger.

I doubt there would be one out yet honestly. I don't know that but it took a while to get one for the 12+ so I would just wait it out

(In reference to your filter Q)

Really? I'm surprised. Maybe it's because yours is a 4 banger but at 75 cruising in my 16 M/T i'm sitting at 2500 rpms getting close to 20 mpgs.

V6s did the same, you should try a tank keeping highway RPM at 2k and see what it does for your MPGs.

    Seriously.

I'm going to try it. I usually accelerate very slowly and shift around 2500 rpms to get the best mileage. Might take me an extra 10 minutes to get where I'm going but at least I'm saving some pennies.

Sometimes I enjoy the challenge of driving a whole tank with the goal of MPGs. I'm not a drive slow kind of person, so it isn't as fun - but it's reasonably entertaining having a running contest of what you can squeeze out of your tank.

When I was stock I was averaging 23/24 with a high of 28. Now that I'm lifted I'm lucky to hit 20 on that same drive that I got 28 on, and average anywhere between 17-18.5 MPG each tank.

That's not a bad way to think about it actually. I'm way more likely to be on board if it's a game.

Cruising in the slow lane (65-70mph) is the best thing you can do for your mpg. Granted I have a first gen, but as soon as I go over 70 my mileage takes a plunge. Otherwise, I can keep it between 20-21mpg on the highway. I'm sure the newer trucks can do even better under those circumstances. I don't know what traffic is like in your area but out here in socal, I've gotten used to people flying past me...fortunately most of our freeways are multi-lane so I just creep along over on the right lol.

Leave this forum now, otherwise you're guaranteed to loose 3-5 mpgs in just a few months... Before you know it you're lifted 3 inches on mud tires and looking at winch bumpers!:mudding:good luck

Yeah shouldn't be an issue. Also with the economy app up on the dash and watching your average mpg right there, it's easy to try and make it a game to keep it above 20 mpgs.
