I am looking into purchasing a Tacoma when my current vehicle dies. I am looking into what the MPG will be. I drive on the highway to and from work so it will be almost all highway miles. I would like to know what people are getting and what they have done to improve their MPG and did it work. I am looking into both the access cab and double cab with a long bed. I appreciate any information that is shared. Thank you.

There are a ton of threads on mpg if you do a quick search.

Not to be shitty, but don't buy a truck of any kind if mpg is a big concern. I literally just got my new Taco a few days ago and haven't been home, he's only got 49 miles, so I couldn't tell you. I know for sure if you get lift/level and bigger tires you will drop 2-3 mpg. If you are wanting 25+ mpg don't buy one because you won't get it. I just accept that it will be what it will be and get rid of something else in life to make up difference. I got rid of direct tv and that's saving me close to $100 per month, goes to my gas fund⛽️.

My Ford crew cab was getting below 17 mpg with 2.7 eco boost driving easy, sometimes lower. So, it is what it is and it varies depending on who you ask. My neighbors ford got 12-13 mpg because he drove too damn fast and brakes hard at lights. You pay to play my friend. Good luck.

My best recorded was 25.3 from Orlando to the Gulf Coast and back this past weekend (222 miles total). My regular daily commute is 33 miles one way and I average right around 22mpg. The difference is likely caused by the volume of traffic and the necessity to slow down and speed up based on traffic conditions. What works for me is I try and get to speed quickly - not mashing the pedal to the floor, but I dip into the throttle and get to whatever speed I plan on "holding" and then I do my absolute best to keep it there. I use the ECO app constantly...I don't know why but I can be going 70mph and the MPG meter is at 15, but I'll back off the throttle a millimeter speed stays at 70mph and the MPG meter goes to 30, and then I just try and hold it there (traffic permitting).

The truck is capable of some pretty impressive fuel economy. Once I was in the Tampa area I was in pretty heavy traffic out to the beach. I'm guessing if I had been able to hold 70mph the whole way I would have been at 28+.

Also, I have slightly larger than stock rubber on my OR 265/70/17. So about 1.5" diameter over stock. Replaced them after about 2,000 miles and saw no noticeable difference in fuel economy, but I also don't race from stop light to stop light. I currently have just over 6,000 miles on my truck and have noticed the MPG's steadily improving over time.

Well, I personally get 20-23 regularly city as long as I drive long enough for the engine to warm up. Freeway really depends. I usually don't get much if anything better there, but our freeways are supper hilly here.

Bottom line, the new engine can get really good mileage if you drive them right. And vise-versa.

Really depends on the roads you drive on. I've had mine 7 weeks now and haven't done anything to it to improve the gas mileage. I've taken it on a couple of trips where I was driving mostly flat highways. Using cruise control on those trips, I was getting right around 25 MPG. However, driving on the highway around my home, I am lucky to get 18 MPG because there are a lot of hills.

There are no mods that will raise MPG significantly w/o either compromising the performance of the truck or being a losing proposition $/gain wise. IE ROI is way too long.

Take the published numbers and adjust driving style till you achieve them. If the published numbers are unacceptable when you consider the cost of fuel doubling back up in the future, a truck may not be your solution as a commuter.

I have the TRD OR 4X4 DCSB Auto, I get 16/17 mpg ... with 95% highway at posted 75 mph with 12,000 miles. No matter what I have tried mpg is about the same. If your highway driving is over 70 mph ... get a manual. My Taco shifts 100 times in 50 miles one way to work if on cruise or windy outside. I drive at 70 mph at posted 75 mph and it is not too bad. I have gotten 18 mpg if I drive at 55 mph.

I get about 22-23 on the highway at 70 and it drops to 20-21 at 75MPH, using cruise control. I have gotten 25-26 at 55, but i am rarely on a road like that for extended times. DC 4x4 automatic.

image.jpg This is the best I've gotten so far on an extended trip. I usually get between 19-22 on most trips around town. V6 4x2 TRD sport with air dam removed.

How many miles are on your truck? I'm just now getting to almost this exact mileage with about 3k on the truck, was closer to 18mpg until recently. I get 23-23.5 at ~65mph, 22-22.5 @ 70mph, ~20 @ 75mph. Seems like 60-65mph is the sweet spot with this truck.

I average 16.5 mpg with a mixture of city and highway. I have no idea how these guys get the mileage they do. Maybe I just have bad luck. Even when i went on a 250 mile trip all highway I only got 18.8 mpg. I have completely babied a tank of gas and only gotten around 17 mpg. I don't mind because it's better than the 11mpg I was getting in my mustang. Plus it's a decent sized truck with a fairly small engine imo. I'm at 3600 miles now so I'm giving up hope that it's just the trans learning stage.

tire pressure plays into MPG's too so you can play around with that and find what works for you. That's what I did. I started at 40 front and 38 rear. It's stiffer but you get better MPG's. I went all the way down to 30 front and 28 rear but got around 16-17 MPG's. I'm at 36 front and 34 rear now. It's mostly highway with a hill each way and I'm around 20 doing 85 both ways. Some people do the chalk test to get a perfect contact patch with the tread and ground.

I get 20-22 city driving in a small town. Mostly 5 miles at a time to and from work. 65 MPH cruising highways 25 ish. Going 80 on the freeway drops to 19. I am a fairly conservative driver with a light foot.
