It did sound weird, but the guy was/is a Taco enthusiast and had his own third gen OR in the parking lot, so I took him at his word. Ah well :).

Here is my 44 round mile trip to work I do every day. Keep in mind I have a 3 inch lift w/stock 245 tires. Scangauge is calibrated and very accurate compared with hand calculation. I just killed the ignition and put up my sun shield to those who comment on the 0 rpm.

I own a 2nd Gen so no worried about the "learning phase" of the trans. That's why I don't own a 3rd Gen.
But I give it enough gas for it to shift properly. That's easy to do at low RPM. But you are correct, you can't be too light on the pedal.

This new auto transmission is pretty good for efficiency if you can keep it in 6th. My best friend has a 2011 2.7 SC armored up with full ARB f/r bumpers and fox suspension with the manual 5speed and he gets 19mpg average with 265/70r16 babying the pedal.

Hurricane0331 your question is impossible to answer. You have not told us the
condition of your current vehicle or when you will be in the market for a replacement.
to say ". . .when my current vehicle dies." And then follow that up with "I am looking
into what the MPG will be." isn't much more help. I for one have no idea if you are
talking about one month or 10 years from now. Based on technological improvements
made between today, when you intend to buy and what modifications you make to
your new vehicle, answering your question would be akin to pulling a figure out of
thin air (or some other less fragrant location). But, I will go out on a limb and say
it might possibly be better than you are getting now!

I'm surprised more people aren't mentioning fuel blends for fuel economy. Higher ethanol blend=lower mpg. Maybe nobody cares since the price of higher ethanol blends at the pump is usually lower per gallon, so it ends up being a bit cheaper anyway?

These new Tacoma trucks are designed to run well on 10%, won't hurt mpg. The whole industry is designed this way.

Marine world and ethanol = trouble. Always use rec 90 octane.

Ethanol gums up injectors and carbs.

Three fill ups now on the new truck. I didn't track them before just went with the digital read out that I was averaging between 20 and 25MPG depending on the route and conditions. Just started to use Fuelly and we'll see how real world conditions do.

Make sure you get the 2 bedroom fuelly apt. You'll have more room to grow.

Optimal fuel efficiency to power ratio: V6, 4x2, highway speeds AT OR BELOW 70 miles per hour.

Do this properly with a light foot and you get low to mid 20s. Drive it like you stole it and you're gonna be in the 18-20 combined mpg like me. But lets be real, if I drove like this in a 2010 Silverado I'd be in the teens.

That being said OP, if you are looking for good highway MPG in all conditions a new F150 or Silverado will absolutely CRUISE at higher highway speeds compared to the Tacoma. The Taco just can't seem to hold up decent numbers against the wind resistance. YMMV

Right, but somebody could run E-15 in these trucks without any issues...or I suppose e-85 if they really wanted to....might have issues as its not flex fuel though. But running E-15 would lower MPG a bit as opposed to E-10 and other premium blends.

Running 32.8" tires at 75-80 i am getting 15 MPG. So i ran a little experiment this week after i got the TSB done. So all week i drove 58MPH with cruise set and i got 18.1 MPG's ! Thats is the best i have had since my lift and wheels went on. It was absolutely insane to have to drive that slow for a couple extra miles ! I do want to add i can now use cruise control and not go crazy with all the unneeded downshifting ! My lag from reverse to drive is gone and my truck over all seems to be more responsive, fun to drive . I have about 1000 miles since the TSB and is greatly improved. I will still be doing a gear change!!!!!!!
