Exactly - Like they say...There is no thing as a free lunch- Trying to compare mpg figures is an exercise in frustration as there are way too many variables. If you make a mod to your truck that decreases the mileage...Fine, just pay the difference and shut up. :)

I mean I do understand, it's not my first taco with larger tires. But I had an 01 DCSB before this, with 33" tires, and it got the same mileage (adjusted) as my 2017 with 32" tires. It's just rather disappointing. I'm saving for 4.88's I'm sure it will make all the difference, but the offroad should have come min with 4:10 gears. More likely 4:30 like it's manual counterpart. That was huge failure on Toyota's part.

I'm not necessarily talking about a road trip but getting off the beaten path where it isn't as simple as stopping at the next gas station.

Here's the cool thing... let's say a stock Tacoma gets 20 mpg average. You mod it up, lift it, put on big ol tars and boom. You now get 14 mpg average on the road. Sucks eh?
The good news is, in your scenario of being "out in the wilderness not close to a gas station" you won't get proportionally worse mpg. Meaning, you won't get 12 or 10 or 8.

Physics does not care what vehicle you mod... if you add weight, rolling resistance and drag you WILL lose efficiency. Have fun out there.

Why are there still dummies out there comparing diesel MPG to gas mpg? You disingenous people need to factor increased fuel costs, and increased maintenance costs. Also DEF costs. Not to mention the engine option cost from the factory.

Auto is much more efficient, especially on the highway. Look at my mileage in my sig. never broken 20 ever in 36k miles and I have factory wheels and tires. This is with a camper shell which I think probably costs me .5mpg. The manual has the 4.3:1 rear end which is over 2500rpm at highway speeds.

Screw mpg. I got the truck to have fun. Not worry about every drop of fuel I can save. Would it be nice to get about 14 on long trips and wheeling? Absolutely! Does it make me want to get rid of my truck because I don’t? Absolutely not.

    THIS!

My fire department has actually stopped purchasing ambulances and staff vehicles with diesel engines due to increased maintenance and running costs as well as decreased reliability. We're also deleting emission controls on the ones we still have in service.

But we can do that, as there are no emission laws in Kansas.

I care because I was advertised an average of 12L/100k.
This should cost me about $7200 a year.
After a year of driving and 40000+ km i have found my average to be 14.5L/100km.
This has actually cost me around $8700

That's $1500 a year extra on gas. That could have bought be a steel bumper, roof rack, winch, ect ect ect.

That's why I give a damn about my fuel mileage.

Edit: the equivalent of $1.50/Liter is $4.44 a gallon...

It's about $.40 up here. Don't forget the cost of DEF. Besides, nothing worse than running low on DEF and the stupid truck going into limp mode when you're doing CPR on grandma in the back!

As much as i like diesel engines, probably will not own truck with diesel engine in US.
Because of so much cost difference between gas and oil burner engine just in maintenance.

Hell, I remember 45 cents a gallon and even then i cared about mileage and that hasn't changed since. Care or dont care, whatever. Most people care about different things, it's a prerogative of living in a free country. Yes, I bought a truck knowing it woudnt get the mileage of a prius but that doesnt mean I don't care how far my $60 gets me. The last truck had a 4L V6 and I dont miss it a bit since I can go 50% farther(24mpg vs 16) with that same $60 and every few weeks I have an extra hundo still in my pocket. Some care more about the vroom and zoom or lift and travel and that's fine by me, mod days and get togethers would be ever so boring if we all drove exactly the same rig.

Not critical like your situation, but we have this Ford Transit diesel as our shop runabout/mobile repair vehicle and it doesn't like short trips around the city (which is 90% of the time for us). We'll start getting warnings about the DPF clogging up, which if ignored will put the damned thing into de-rate and can only be cleared by a scan tool. That's under what I would call normal use. PITA.

Our solution? Once a week take it out on the highway and run the piss out of it. How's that for efficiency? Oh and don't even start on the regen cycle.

Modern diesels with their emissions systems are a big nope for me.
