I just bought 2018, less than 1k miles. But I get crap mileage. I am 90% city and come in between 13-16mpg. Does this get better with time? Nowhere near 18mpg. Live at normal altitude and no hills.

I got about 400 miles and I’m averaging 16, I know there is some break in time so I’m not worried about it. Also came from an old truck that got about -3 mpg. Give it some time

Sitting in traffic you get 0 mpg and that has to average in with your best efforts.

Was a joke...umm sorry? Didn’t mean to upset you dude...it was more of a play on this whole MPG caring stuff. Clearly we all bought a truck, MPG is decent for its class, but those whole believes the advertised numbers to be the norm should have researched the conditions in which they were tested, and then decide if they were willing to drive that way I suppose. It boggles me too that anyone would expect ANY advertised MPG from any manufacturer as those tests are done under some unrealistic conditions...and AS unrealistic those conditions were, as long as it was doable to achieve the best results, we really can’t blame anyone other than those who believe it to be the norm...

I am wondering if I made the right choice getting the manual. I am getting around 14.7 l/100 km (16 US mpg) and it seems others with the same model but auto tranny are getting 12.5 l/100 km (18.8 US mpg) all day long. That costs me around $500 per year at current gas prices around here.

My last car was a diesel so maybe I am trying to get the same amount of torque off the line and am using way too much fuel in the process.

Only other thing I can think of is that I have E-rated KO2s which weigh around 38 kg per corner and raised the truck around 23 mm.

On the other hand, I enjoy rowing gears and it is probably worth $500/year to me.

My Subaru Forester regularly exceeds it's rated mpg. Same as my Chrysler 300 I had years ago. Our Jetta TDI also far exceeded it's rating, by as much as 6mpg sometimes.

I'm in agreement with why do full size get 22+ while me 5 spd 4cyl reg cab can't hardly break 20. I love everything else about it. If it takes putting a Corolla motor in my truck, I'll pass.

I've never owned ANY vehicle that didn't match the advertised MPG. That includes the 2007 Tacoma and 2014 F-150 in the driveway. Other than slightly larger, mildly aggressive off road tires both are basically stock. I drive sensibly around town and meet the EPA numbers and always have. On the highway I keep speeds at or slightly under 70 mph and will meet EPA numbers. The key is not trying to set a record 0-60 time when starting which is the biggest mistake I see drivers make.

The 2nd mistake is adding hundreds of pounds of mostly useless accessories that reduces aerodynamics. The big tires and lift's in most cases result in 1" or less more ground clearance over my trucks. Off road driving skill will more than make up for 1" of ground clearance.

There are times, such as towing, or hauling heavy loads when I don't get the advertised mpg. And times when I need to get from point A to point B in a hurry and am willing to risk the speeding ticket and pay for the reduced fuel mileage.

Does it make a difference financially. Short term probably not so much, but long term it does. I traded a 2002 F-150 that got the advertised 14/17 mpg for my 2007 Tacoma that actually beats the advertised mpg a bit. I tend to get 17/20. After 190,000 miles that 3 mpg means almost 2400 gallons less fuel. That's $5000-$8000 depending on fuel costs spread over 11 years. My new F-150 BTW gets the advertised 16/19 mpg and the difference in fuel costs is much less. But still there.

BTW, if I'm concerned about fuel costs I drive my old Honda. Which I do as much as possible around town and for shorter trips. It gets 40 mpg and driving it as much as I can not only saves me money on fuel it reduces wear and tear on trucks that are much more expensive to maintain. I can buy 4 tires for the Honda for not much more than 1 tire for the F-150.

I'd gladly give up MPG's for more torque. The smiles alone would pay for it.

Bad day I guess, but there's plenty of people who don't say it as a joke, and it was combined with the fact there's no need for this thread. If the OP doesn't want to hear about people trying to get better mileage he shouldn't click on those threads. However, he felt the need to bitch about people trying to get better mileage cause that isn't what he tries to do with his rig obviously. Everyone here understands what they have and are trying to optimize it. Big deal? Sorry I didn't understand your joke.

Besides trading in our trucks, we're at the mercy of the engineers. If toyota comes out with a hybrid truck, I'll probably be on board

If Toyota was to start selling a hybrid truck right now, I'd still just read about it and all the complaints. I'm one revamp, and one complete model change behind the curve with my VERY reliable 2011....and damn happy with what I have. I see no good reason to take a $25000 price hit (or more) to save a couple or three hundred bucks a year. Just doesn't pencil out for me. Not at all convinced "new technology" makes for a more capable off road experience....Different? yes. Better? Not so much. I'll stand pat with what I have.

Again, I WILL do what I can (within reason) to get as good of mpg's with what I have, but let's be honest about it...NO ONE in their right mind would spend 25K to "save" $2500 or $3000 (at the very most) over the life of a vehicle. Explaining it as the rationale' for buying a new truck is a feeble attempt to justify buying a new toy. BTDT, not interested in spending money that is far better off staying in the bank.

    YMMV....Literally.

I accept what I get for gas mileage. Last time I checked it was 18. If I couldn’t afford the gas, I wouldn't drive it.
My stepsons girlfriend has a Prius and they are "tree huggers". I was asked to move a chair for them 2 weeks ago, because it didn't fit in the car. I will remind them of this next time they give me crap for mpg.
