The weekend gas jumped to $1 a gallon was horrible and a giant shock ! If I remember right gas went from 70 cents to $1.04 in a couple days in 1977 ?
9 mpg at 70 cents was no big deal !

Most people finance their cars. If gas prices go up, or you're getting much less (some people get ~5mpg less than others), it can effect the cost of ownership a lot. On top of a payment you have to pay rising fuel prices, insurance, maintenance, etc. Every MPG is ~$10/month. If someones getting 15 mpg and they were expecting 20 mpg; that's a lot of money.

If you own out-right and pay everything yearly it isn't so bad.

I've wanted an SM for years. They are definitely hooligan bikes or can easily bring out the hooligan. Ha!

Cornering on a bike is something that I just can't live without. That feeling on entry and apex on out with a lot of throttle. . . Yeah, highway ramps give me wood. We're an hour away from most any good road.

I had to talk myself down from an SM before I got the sidecar. The plan now, once life stays normal for a while, is to get a used MX, convert it to road legal which is stupid easy here, slap on an enduro tank, and grab some road wheels to swap back and forth.

I do hear about folks having a lot of issues with drivers. I am able to plan my commute around avoiding traffic (in and out early). Less folks moving a lot faster. That might have helped?

I understand how the tests are done. If you read your link, the underlying theme of the test is "EPA." EPA knows what is the most efficient shift points ans speeds and tire pressures and everything else. The most efficient general operating speed per EPA is 55 mph. The numbers generated are the most efficient this vehicle is going to get, on average. That is why I used 55 mph in my post.

Also, if someone dosen't even know to check their tire pressure to improve mpg, you think they will understand the testing process?

I don’t believe 55 MPH has anything to do with current testing guidelines, more specifically, is my point. Though if you know an article that quotes that, send it my way.

I remember reading one that disproved that but couldn’t locate it in a quick search.

    That calculator is interesting.

Assuming 15k miles driven per year, @ $3.39 a gallon my 18mpg truck costs $1200 more than a 30mpg equivalent per year. That's about 3 car payments. So those saying get a secondary more fuel efficient car for commuting, really doesn't make financial sense too....the break even point would be years

I don’t so much care about fuel economy as I do fuel range. The fact the Tacoma has a tiny range makes fuel economy more important as the difference between 15 mpg and 20 mpg is 100 miles (300 to 400). With the amount of miles I may put on in a day or week that’s a huge difference in the number of times I have to stop and find fuel. I’ve put on more miles in a month than some have all year (4-6k).

Towing and getting say 10-12 mpg is incredibly painful with a 21 gallon tank. Some people with tires / armor / etc are getting this all the time and I couldn’t do it.

People will argue you shouldn’t get a truck if fuel economy is important. Contrary to some beliefs, some people actually need and use their truck to do truck things which cannot be done with a car.

The statement above infuriates me. Why purchase something you obviously can't afford then mod it to make it less affordable and then start complaining about it not getting the mpgs the sticker showed?

    Idiocy at it's best.

So many people spend $40k on a vehicle then want to mod it but can't afford to do it the right way, then they get butthurt when the advice they are given isn't the advice they were hoping for.

    Snowflakes and tree-huggers everywhere...

I purchased my truck to mod the shit out of it and to beat the shit out of it knowing that what I was going to do would make the mpg's terrible. But guess what, I have been pleasantly surprised with the 16-17 mpgs I get on the highway with 35's, 4.88's and full armor.

I didn't link my truck because I care about MPG's, but I could care less what anyone else does with their money or how they prefer to save it. If that infuriates you then you probably need to take a step back. You do realize snowflakes can be described as people that get upset about very trivial things?

From wiki definition of snowflake includes "is easily offended and unable to deal with opposing opinions"
