    Just looking for some good gas mileage from my new tacoma 4 cy 5 sp prerunner. My old 2001 tocoma(same thing)got great mpg. The new one, not too good. 19.6 mpg best almost 3000 miles on the 2007 tacoma.

    getting there....
    switch up to synthetic oil may help a little bit. some of the guys here with the 4 cyls will be able to chime in a little better than me with what they have done!

    New Tacomas are bigger and probably heavier. My '95 4 banger 5lug automatic always got around 23mpg. My 2007 5lug automatic gets 20 mpg. I live in a hilly area, have a 160lb shell, drive 80+ on the freeway and haven't taken a long enough trip to have just highway miles on one tank yet. I imagine I'll see 24+ on my next Vegas trip though.

    Bug shield, window visors, skid plate, rust proofing, tonneau cover, paint & upholstery protection, side step bars, navigation system.
    Keep your engine under 1,900 RPM on every gear and see what it does to your MPG.

    If you are doing Highway driving it may be more realistic to stick around 2200 RPMs.

    My mileage on my 2.7L has steadily increased. I started out around 19 MPG average. By the time I hit 13,000 miles, I was averaging 24 MPG. I am pretty hard on my truck (it is a truck), so I am sure you can get better than that.

    Here is what I am doing to my 4 cylinder PreRunner -
    High Flow Drop-In Air Filter
    Remove Secondary (coal based) Air Filter - DO NOT DO THIS IN CALIFORNIA
    Underdog Racing Developement MAF Calibrator
    High Flow Exhaust
    Amsoil 5W30 Synthetic
    USE REGULAR (89 octane) GASOLINE - your 4 cylinder is made for this kind of fuel

    Please notice I did NOT say I was doing any of this to improve economy. The best thing you can do for your economy - be kind to the accelerator pedal. My idea is that by helping my truck produce power, I won't need to "PUNCH IT" as much. Right now I punch it a bunch since the I-10 is my drag back and forth to work.

    Going heavy on the accelerator usually costs me 3-4 MPG.

    Amsoil 0w-20 engine oil and Amsoil Full synthetic 75w-90 in the Transmission, transfer case, front and rear Differentials. AFE Cold Air Intake
    It really depends how you drive. If you drive with your foot in it your probably going to see between 17 and 19mpg. I've gotten as good as 25mpg on the highway before going 70-75. I have the four cylinder but it is a 4x4 6 lug.

    I think the worst I have seen (sittin in Houston traffic for 2 hours) was about 19 MPG. My average on a "pushed" tank is 20-22 MPG - I can't complain about that.

    Well that makes sense...the added weight of the 4x4 is going to have more effect under acceleration than at constant speeds. Either that or my lead foot is heavier than yours! :p
    I think the worst i've seen was 17mpg but that was the night I went mudding and I had it in four low almost all night. I usually see about 22 mostly around town a few highway miles here and there.

    Thanks for the ideas on better MPG's. I will try synthetic oil at the oil change and keep the RPM's down and see what happens.

    I'd do the math on cost v/s savings on that one.
    I tried using premium fuel instead of regular for a couple of tanks.
    Got between 1 and 2 mpg better but higher cost for fuel made it a wash.

    I only got 15 mpg. out of my first tank on my brand new Tacoma Access. I'm very disappointed. Got 22 out of my old Nissan all through 20 years of it's life. This was all around town driving. I am not a hot rodder at all, but neither do I drive like an old lady. I was shocked at how bad the mileage was. I keep doing the math, but I keep getting the same thing. Yes, I ran the air, but my co-worker has an '04 (I think 6 cylinder) with all the bells and whistles (mine is just the SR5) and he blasts his air all summer, even when the windows are down, and he gets 20 around town. I hope this gets better. This is really NOT what I had bargained for. I've never had a vehicle that got such low mileage.
