Ive had my truck for a month and have put about 1500 miles on it. Some city some Hwy, but I've always average 16.8. Even after going up to bigger size tires. Whats the deal? Sticker say 18/22 avg 20. I drive normal and try my best to increase mpg. Anyone else having the same mpg's?? What are you getting?

Well first off EPA is just an estimate
Second, you have a heavier and bigger tire than stock w/ more of an aggressive threading
third, there are hundreds of other factors.

My average is about 15.7 right now. I drive almost all city driving though. I've yet to see highway mileage completely, but from my short highway trips, I can see getting around 21 mpg.

    Configuration:
    2020 TRD OR DCLB
Stock everything except a 70lb (total) set of rocker steps.
500 miles on the odometer, I'm hoping it improves by 5,000 or so miles.

The tires didn't change it one bit. At least not a whole mile per gallon. Its been in the 16 range since day one. I was wondering if this is what everyone else was experiencing? I was getting that with 33's on a lifted V8.

I have a manual transmission, I fly on the highway on the way to work, getting about 17mpg (80+ mph) and backroads (45-60mph) home, getting about 22mpg. It's a truck, if you have issue with the fuel economy then you picked the wrong vehicle and worse, you don't know how to drive it. (Not a direct shot at you, but a blanket statement. This is an extremely common topic here.)

Edited to add backroad speeds for proper context.

I'm coming from a 2003 Ranger 3.0 single cab with 154 hp and half the size that got similar mpg, so no complaints here even at around 16 city mpg lol.

sounds like you have the answers
if you know so much why are you going 80+mph in a truck? Sounds like you got the wrong vehicle.

i drive very conservatively (mostly city, some highway) and i am getting ~16mpg. i only have 600 miles on the truck though so im hoping it will get better after being fully broken in.

Right?? My last truck was a full size chevy, 5.3, 4x4, 3.42s, etc and got 18mpg going easy on backroads. I get 22-24 on backroads with almost as much power and the truck is only 500lb lighter... with 4.30 gears! I'm quite happy.

Thats what I was wondering if there was a break in period where there is less resistance on new parts.

I got the right vehicle because I am completely happy with it and it does everything I want it to do. You're the unhappy one.
I did a bunch of audio stuff at about 6000mi, which included the battery being disconnected a few times, thus resetting the on board fuel economy stuff and per its newer calculations, the numbers went up a little bit. So with that, I suspect a little improvement after break-in/ first service (if they did any programming, that was a long oil change) combined with gradually learning how to drive my truck the way it is engineered to be. Each vehicle is different, even between the same model. They have their quirks.

    50/50 I'd say that's about right. I get 15 all city, 16-17 50/50, and 18-20 mostly highway stock

Make sure you hand calculate mpg if you want it to be accurate.

Few peeps references the on board computer. Those can be within +/-1, but they can also be as off as +/-5 from what I’ve seen on various vehicles. For those who care anyway.

OP, I’d be willing to bet that as you change driving habits and get to know where the truck is happiest fuel economy wise your numbers will rise. I used to like to hypermile a bit and see if I could break my old mpg records while I would DD haha just for fun, and got way above EPA in most vehicles (standard helps) but at the end of the day it’ll come down to your driving habits as far as things you can actually control. Sure, keep the lightest tires you can and don’t lift it if you want to keep your weight and aero good. Weather is out of your control. So only thing that’s on you is how you drive. Cheers :)

“If you had to brake, you made a mistake” is the name of the game. Obviously someone is going to be dumb and point out that you have to brake at stops and for cars, etc. But if you drive as if you didn’t have brakes and always look way ahead and coast more you’ll see that number jump.

It’s also not dumb to want both a truck and the best gas mileage possible within that trucks parameters. People who make those mutually exclusive are just repeating what they’ve heard without any critical thinking. Good luck!

Tacoma is not fuel efficient. Full size trucks get better mileage.

Going from a full size to a midsize just changes the size of the truck, not the fuel economy. Welcome to Tacoma land, “where it’s not as good as you thought it would be.”

Because it’s smart to watch your gas mileage. It’s a great pre-problem diagnostic tool and believe it or not makes a difference in your annual budget. Thanks for your contribution to society though haha.
