Yep, a man’s dog is a tough companion to lose. Working on my 75th year I just don’t have what it takes to get another. My experiences with my old Rosco were immeasurable.

Yes Sir. Was he an American Pointer or German Shorthair? Hard to make out for me in pics. Looks German...but he was a big boy.

German short hair. He was my companion for the 1000 mile trip 4-5 times a year to visit my parents. Sat up in the passenger seat like a human most of the way. Pretty funny.

Re-evaluted ... the background and terrain flow of field pic made him look big, to my eye. He was normal size and a beautiful doggo. :)

Actually he was small. Never got over 49 lbs. gave him lots of energy so he could hunt all day wearing me out! LOL!
Sadly I had him cut. A number of breeders gave me a hard time about it, but he was a very happy dog. The breeders that saw him pheasant hunt also gave me a hard time because he would point a pheasant, check to see I was behind him, then he backed out and ran around to point blocking the pheasant from running. I never saw another dog do that. Only heard of one that was a female. It was a learned thing and not trainable so they told me.

I’ve never seen a hydraulic scissors jack! Interesting!

So my Dad had an American Pointer named Lady. I grew up, in more ways than just quail hunting over Lady. I can remember when I was either 8 or 9, before I even carried a shotgun, my Dad and other man bulltalkin about whose dog was better. Finally they agreed to hunt their dogs together. Well, Lady found more coveys and singles than the other dog, like 3 or 4 to 1 better. That evening over dinner in a truck stop cafe, the man slid $500 across the table and said, "this plus my Benelli shotgun for your dog." Even at mid '70s prices, that Benelli was a $1200 shotgun IIRC. My Dad looked him calmly in the eye and said, "Lady is not for sale at any price.
Lady wasn't a fancy dog, on point she was flat as a board nose to end of her tail. As she aged she eventually went deaf. She'd hunt off from us and when she didn't come back in 30 mins or so, we'd go find her. Every time as I recall, she'd be on point. As we approached she look over a shoulder as if to say, "where have you been. Then she'd move back on the covey which had walked out from under her nose. There were always birds where Lady said there were. Great birddog and great temperment as well.
