Definitely having normal MT shifting is a big deal.

Every once in a while an AT person will say that we don't have shifting issues. Hahaha! I chat them up about this and the way things were before 04B13 / 04A71.

Every once in a while you'll hear an AT person say that a gear locked 3rd gen is just like driving a manual...

Or how test driving their customer's freshly tuned MT for a few miles qualifies them to discuss how it drives long term as a daily driver

Eh I don't think the slush boxes are as bad as people say, the problem is a lot of people don't understand how to actually drive automatics. You have to work with the engine you can't just floor it and expect it to behave like a Camaro when you want it to.

That being said, the slush box behind the 2.7 l with ECT mode is much preferable driving characteristics to the slush box behind the 3.5

I have to disagree. 95% of the folks that I have flashed are floored with the difference. Immediately after and beyond. Even the 4.0l folks are shocked by the changes. That remaining 5% were thrilled down the road.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that Toyota NA has no clue when it comes to small truck tune development.

That is the thing about ATs. You don't need to know how to drive one, day to day. Special situations (wheeling / towing), sure. There are some tricks.

The 3rd gen slushbox is ok if you stay stock and never go over 55.. otherwise it’s trash

I mean yes, tuning makes a massive huge difference with the AT box. But people talk about gear hunting being unbearable and the ECU not knowing which gear to be and having no power in my experience just isn't that. But again, I'm driving at like a truck, most guys who first buy Tacomas think their sports trucks and try and race around in them and then wonder why they don't respond as such.

Well.... Yeah. Not the 2.7 though

I've been along board and most folks are wanting to do truck things. I'd say, while most of my folks are modded, a fair number are stock and about 25% are looking for a sports truck.

Maybe it is a regional difference? Even out on the road, I'll see a lot of Tacos in the right lanes with a few ripping up the left lane or weaving through traffic.

IMHO, the tune makes the autotragic into a normal automagic. Nothing more. Just normal, expected reactions. Folks seem to appreciate that.

For expected actions, the MT is for me.

IMHO out here though, the diesel bros and anyone in a Stellantis / FCA product have either a burr in their ass or some weird inferiority complex. While I have come to respect H-Ds for what they are, that other group reminds me of them. Converting a bunch of fuel into noise and not really getting anywhere fast.
