A bitch, but that is totally self-inflicted. Apparently I didn't get the clamp on the reservoir hose good enough, so I started leaking fluid quite profusely. Re-tightened the top line and then re-clamped the hose, much better the second time. Otherwise just the standard small space and small wrench-turn stuff. I didn't remove anything but the shield and accumulator. Actually putting the inner disk in the accumulator was obviously a breeze, and reinstall went much smoother. Bleeding the clutch was easy using page two of the instructions that @tonered attached to the first post. I also added some heat tape to the shield before I reinstalled it for what I hoped would be sound deadening, since IMO this is a noisy transmission. I think its a bit quieter now, but that could be placebo effect I suppose.

I thought I read this was a direct install / minimal modification way to do it?

As far as I know there is no such a thing as a flush for manual transmissions; flushes, as in machine flushes, are exclusively the domain of autotragic transmissions.

There are plenty of fluid exchange machines with hose adapters. Some clown inevitably somewhere will try and hook one up and suck everything out of a manual.

LOL, I'd love to see some tech trying to find the cooling lines from between the transmission and the radiator so the flush machine can be hooked up.

I mean..... There is the drain and fill plugs.... Lol

And that is why you never take a vehicle to a quick lube shop. Some clown will hook up an oil line to his transmission fluid exchange machine.... And somehow it'll be your fault and they won't have to pay for any of the damage.

Maybe there are new flushing machines out there, but every one I've ever seen require connection to the ATF cooling lines; there are exactly zero fittings for the likes of a manual transmission.

Flushing would be dumping new clean fluid into the fill port or shifter opening with the drain out. Just a waste of fluid, money and time. Always better to drain when warmed up, so as much of the contamination is suspended in the fluid, rather than draining cold where everything is stuck to the bottom of the case.

That plus draining cold would take a long time depending upon the OAT, around here in the winter time it could take hours to drain a cold transmission. :)

Just did the mod today. took about an hour and a half only because some of the bolts going back together decided to be difficult. I ended up milling mine only because I have a lathe w/ a mill attachment. Clutch now feels predicable. I give this mod two thumbs up for anyone on the fence.

I used DOT 3 brake fluid. Should say in your owners/service manual.

Edit: from the 3rd Gen DIY maintenance thread: FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 or SAE J1703

Dot 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. Same reservoir. Do not let it get air into the system or you'll have to bleed your brakes too (not hard, just annoying)

When doing the Flex line method (Honda s2000 ap1 braided clutch line), that is the only h/w required? And is it as effective as some of the other methods?
