To be fair..... Subaru cvts don't seem to have issues.

Underpowered and geared wrong in the Crosstrek (it comes in manual, get the manual)

Winner! I did have to whack it with a hammer on the backside to get it out but the freezer seems to break the tension. Thanks!

New disk is quite a bit thicker than the stock one. I’m guessing that part is fine as long as reasonable clamping force is used? It’ll just sit slightly off the backing plate?

Ah, yeah, right, b/c no need for the locking ring anymore when using the new disk. Got it. Makes sense. Nice design. Pretty straightforward swap.

Well with the older automatics the trick was to block the acumulator so it didn't move! Yep it would cherp the wheels and snap your head back. Maybe I shouldn't say any thing or the next go around will be the Tacoma automatics! The modern automatics are light years ahead of game but they tend to drive me nuts with all the shifting granted I haven't driven anything but a Ford but I'll stick with my manual until I can't push the clutch in and more.

I'm in the same camp; I've driven pretty much all of the high end automatics (even though I claim/joke not to have never learned how to drive an automatic); the absolute worst are CVTs, then come some of the newer 9 and 10-speed transmissions which can never decide which gear to be in. After those are the classic 6, 5, 4, 3, and even 2-Speed automatics, they were what they were, and then there are the new fangled semi-automatic transmissions like the VW DSG, when you do something which is inline with the expectations of the transmission, it hits the next gear way-WAY faster than a human can shift, however, I've experienced scenarios where you are say, pulling out through heavy cross traffic coming from your left, so you squirt out into the available left turn lane, back off the throttle, see an opening and then attempt to squirt into said opening; the "Go-Fast, back off throttle, and then Go-Fast" commands screw with the transmissions brain as it wasn't expecting either of the commands after the initial Go-Fast. The only automatic transmission I will tip my hat to is the 8-Speed ZF unit (ironically originally developed by Chrysler) found in cars from manufacturers all over the world.

Long story short, I'll take a manual over an automatic every day, and twice on Sunday.

Not developed by Chrysler at all. All they do is build license copies of it.

Well, it seems the article picks up where Chrysler left off, but there was a lot of industry chatter about the new planetary gear transmission Chrysler was developing, and then suddenly it was shunted off to ZF. Why? I can think of a lot of reasons, possibly the most compelling is the likes of BMW and Acura would never be caught dead putting a Chrysler transmission in their vehicles, but ZF? Definitely.

Or..... Chrysler has been such a bad company for so many decades. When they realize there was a better transmission under development, they can theirs and just bought licensing rights for that one? :notsure:

Pretty sure that wasn't the case, I remember the trade journals at the time reporting ZF was really impressed with the the initial design work Chrysler had come up with; initially it was meant to be a partnership, but then the project moved fully over to ZF. It was at that point I remember hearing BMW was very interested in the 8-Speed unit.

Subaru CVTs don’t seem to have issues?!

I stock them because we replace so many. First came the warranty extension on them, because so many people were having problems. Now we’re working on a recall where the fix is to just install a new CVT.

Okay..... East coast subies have CVT issues. For no reason at all, the Midwest subies seem fine... :D :notsure:
