Is anyone considering changing the stock 3.9:1 axle ratio used in the AT trucks to the 4.3:1 ratio used in the MT trucks? This would make the 5th and 6th gears in the AT trucks useful again. It might be costly to make this change but would help.

Not necessarily, if there isn't enough horsepower/torque to handle 6th gear, then gas mileage can increase with lower gearing. I see many posts where people are manually limiting the truck to 5th gear. No point in having a 6 speed auto if the gearing is too tall to use all 6 gears.

All the V6 trucks have the higher gear ratio, it's the 4 cylinder trucks that have the lower rear end gear ratio

So we've been waiting for the new six speed automatic and now we're going to leave it in 5th when we drive. Cool

Not quite, the I4 MT and V6 AT share the 3.909 rear end and the I4 AT and V6 MT share the 4.300.

Reps there 42 for the factual link! I have a M/T V6 and use 5th and 6th gear around town driving to save gas when I'm cruising thru suburbia on my way to/from work. I get consistent 16.5 - 17 mpg surburbs/highway driving. Really don't drive in the city with the Taco.
We live in Philly but extreme NW area might as well be the suburbs. City streets cant even park on em. So no where to go really, that and that's what the train is for.

Thanks for the correct info. Thought for sure I had read that somewhere(not on the forum lol) but will admit when I wrong. That lower gearing with the manual and V6 must be really fun to drive.

It is. Quick enough off the line, and pulls well in middle gears on the mt. passes.

+1 We go out of our way to walk the dog where I can use the 4wd-lo up a fire road to a hiking trail! My dog stands on the console and loves bucking around. It's a lot of fun cant wait till snow is here!
