Just curious as to see how many of you MT drivers shift normal or double clutch shift? If you double clutch what's your reasoning and or benefits other than spoiling the shafts to alleviate synchro stress, isn't that defeating the purpose of synchros in the first place? Just looking for more clarification on the subject.

I drove a tandem Dodge dump truck for years.... I was taught to double-clutch it.... By the end of the day my left leg was a bit sore....

I soon learned to shift without the clutch..... Much easier on the leg and the clutch pedal spring... hehe.... It's all in the revs man..... Get' em right and NO stinkin' clutch needed.....

I actually drove an Austin Morris for 3 yrs. without a clutch as I could NOT afford to fix it..!! It makes life interesting at times when you come up a hill to a red light and have to stop....hehe

The transmission has synchros for a reason. Unless you’re slamming gears at high RPMs, the synchros will easy last well over 200k miles if the fluid is changed on schedule.

More clutch disengagements means more wear on the hydraulic system, TOB (and the grease that libricates it), and the pressure plate diaphragm.

Just shift smoothly and consistently and you will likely never reach the point where the synchros are worn and need to be replaced

I mean.... I rev match to downshift because prefer to have smoother downshifts, but I am not sure why you would need to double clutch on a car that was made in the 1980s or later.

Can someone explain to me the benefit of double clutching? Maybe I don't know what double clutching really is?

That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out, there are a bunch of YouTube videos on it, mostly fast and furious wannabes, I just don't understand the reasoning as to why it would be beneficial to a tacoma driver IF someone drives this way.

Double clutching was for transmissions that didn't have synchros. You would push the clutch. Shift to neutral. Clutch again and then finally shift to your gear.

Fast and furious was talking about tapping clutch in a bit at wot to rev the motor. Does nothing but slow you down and wear your clutch.

Just shift your car. Double clutching does nothing.

Now if your making over 700whp and shifting at 9k rpms you will be replacing synchros anyways. Hard to double clutch at the track. Lol.

No need. Just rev match and down shift for butter smooth transitions.

double clutching serves one purpose. to synchronize gears in an un-synchronized transmission. needless to say the tacoma has a synchronized transmission therefore double clutching is absolutely useless. if you want more technical information google and learn about the two types of manual transmissions and it should become clear.

No, I have never double clutched my Taco or any other modern passenger cars/trucks. I do give it a small "blip" on the accelerator to rev match as mentioned for smooth down shifts. Is it necessary, probably not and most likely not, but I have always driven MT's this way. The Taco has one of the smoothest MT's I have owned / driven - I really do enjoy this truck!

Completely agree. One of my favorite activity while driving a manual transmission :)

IMO, double clutching seems like common core math, a waste of time.
