New TRD Sport, 2,000 miles. At a light this morning I didn't go forward when I thought I was in 1st gear. Pressed the gas a little harder and went backwards, almost hit the car behind me. Turns out I was in reverse. Now, going in to reverse takes a bit of effort, kind of hard to confuse the two. I suppose it could have been user error but I have my doubts, been driving MT for all my life. I did a search here and didn't see any other similar experiences but am wondering if anyone has seen any similar reports or threads on this.

Yep ....that's me. I had a 2nd Gen. MT ( 5 speed - the 3 rd Gen Reverse is where the 1st gear was on the 2nd Gen ).......... so that's my excuse. I did this on a boat ramp last summer ..... first road trip in the new truck !

Reverse is in one place, 1st is in another. Never had a problem (so far) confusing the two. I don't think the transmission can confuse the two either lol.
Now, sometimes when I skip gears I screw up every now and then, like going from 3rd to 6th. I might hit 4th while expecting 6th. Why would I do that you ask? Hard acceleration up to interstate speeds, which you can reach easily in 3rd. Merge into traffic and no reason to go to 4th and 5th, just straight to 6th. No 1st or reverse problem though.

I did that a few times when I first got my Taco, definitely driver error in my case. I was used to having reverse on the other side of the pattern I guess lol.

Did you not notice the backup camera turn on? Or the warning buzzer? You're too tense. Finger pressure to the left is all you need to line up 1st gear.

Can't say I have.. for me it's too obvious which is reverse, feels like I'm pushing it through a "gate" to get into reverse.

I have done it, but... Am I the only person that hears the audible beep and the camera coming on? That is what happened to me when I did it and I realized I was f’ing up and corrected quickly.

    Stock.

My thoughts exactly. Relax br-op. One more thing you can do is try to shift into second. Straight back vs Down and to the right will feel a bit different.

My truck beeps when I put it in reverse. I've never done it personally but when I got it I was kinda worried until I realized how much effort it takes to put it in reverse vs. 1st gear.

No, and no. It all happened very quickly. I think I would have heard the buzzer but didn't. Maybe the music was too loud or something.

How loud is this beep/buzzer you guys get? Does it stay on? I don’t have this issue due to 5spd.

I not what’s gets me going? We r talking about accidentally putting it in reverse.... Yet, when I took my 2nd gen to the car wash a couple of times, the dipscrews there could never even figure out how to put it in reverse. So... I now only hand wash my 3rd gen.

I have done this so damn many times now.... usually when I'm sitting at a light, on a hill, with some guy right on my rear bumper.

I wish the ID10T that designed the transmission would have done it so that 'R' was down, next to 2nd.

/edit: The only time I do this, is when I need to get into 1st gear RIGHT NOW, and in my haste, I grab the stick and pull it as fast as I can to get it into 1st, and then about half the time I end up in Reverse instead. One way to prevent this is to constantly keep it in 1st with clutch pedal depressed while waiting at a light. However, you'll be replacing your clutch springs every couple years if you do it this way.....

This is my 3rd 6 Speed Tacoma and have never had that happen, it takes pretty considerable force to go thru the gate to get over to Reverse, plus as mentioned above you get an audible alarm and camera too.

I agree with the force needed bu to get it in reverse... But, sometimes at a stop some of these trucks can b a little finicky just getting it in 1st which is the only reason I’ve had this issue. Sure 1st is up, and reverse is left and up, but it’s possible and it happened in my 2nd gen as well.

Trust me I’ve driven manuals my whole time driving to include sports cars etc. and it can happen yet the Tacoma is the only vehicle I’ve done it in. Makes me feel silly each time it has happened but as long as u don’t back into someone that’s the main thing.

When I first got the truck I pushed it into reverse a few times when trying to go quickly from neutral to first, but fortunately I noticed before hitting the gas. It really doesn't take much force on my truck to push through the gate over into reverse. First vehicle I've had with reverse on the left, so that also took a little while to get used to.

What I'm amazed by is some of you blaming the truck. Think:
It's the furthest position to the left
    You have to push harder
    A beeper beeps
    The backup camera activates

And you are blaming the truck? Really?
