Never done it in a 2nd gen or 3rd gen myself.
If you find the detent to bump into reverse is too easily overcome when in a rush get a short throw shifter from URD. 50% shorter throw through the gears.... 2x harder to bump past the detent into reverse with it. Plus only having to wrist flick to go between all the gears is nice, can plant your elbow on the console and shift through all the gears, except reverse. Takes a bit of pull or momentum to overcome the detent with the short throw

Sorry, some of us aren't perfect. Have done this numerous times, mostly trying to go in first from reverse and going right back to reverse. What beep? Who is watching the camera when at a light?

Brand spanking new it was tight to get into first. As it wore in at around 10k the trans felt pretty good, gear changes are buttery.

Is there a TRD short shift option for the 3’rd gen’s? That would pretty much guarantee you wouldn’t bone out and end up in R.

It beeps when you shift into reverse. Big long beep. Big screen on dash changes the channel from whatever you are doing to a view out the back. Just the movement catches my eye.

You are right. Nobody is perfect and I am a shining example of multiple imperfections, but I'm not posting about them on the internet lol.

OP's question is perfectly reasonable. I've driven manuals all my life, and yes, when I am in a rush to get in gear and get going, the gate is sometimes not powerful enough to notice and I find myself in reverse.

Yes it beeps, and the camera comes on, but that doesn't mean it didn't go into reverse instead of first.

There is a reason some manufacturers have additional non-linear mechanics to further prevent this, such as pressing down the shifter, or lifting up a ring.

Welcome to the saloon, but please leave your high horse outside.

There is an Audible Beep when you shift into Reverse, you may have just not noticed it before.

No high horse here. Maybe a hobby horse...
And yes, I have put it in 1st instead of reverse a few times. The lack of auditory and tactile feel did not register until I started to let out the clutch. But, that was 100% on me. My stupidity for not paying full attention. Not the truck, not the designer. Stupid me.

They should’ve built it the way VW sets up theirs. Reverse is to the left of first but it requires a distinct and obvious push down and over to go through the gate.

I’ve done it a couple times. The beep has saved me. Now that I’ve had it for a while it’s not really an issue since I’m used to the pattern.

    …except when I go to drive my brothers Tacoma that’s a 5 speed…

    Yea I second this.

The guys who say they haven't had an issue do so because they haven't rushed going from 1st to reverse very quickly.

When you do it really fast, it goes past the retainer with ease and slips into reverse. I STILL have this happen constantly, because I do things so quickly and efficiently, it actually pisses me off Toyota didn't change it down by 2nd, or have to press down like the VWs.

Side note: 30K miles on my 2017 6MT, and the thing is not smooth. They have no clue how to build a manual transmission. Super sloppy and clicks into 2nd and 3rd, religiously. If I throw it into 4LO and shift from 2nd to 3rd that's even worse of a grind.

Think with all the money they have they couldn't have a smooth transmission like Porsche or VW.

Also, when you rev the truck out from 1st to 2nd, sometimes it doesn't want to engage into 2nd. Irritates me for sure. Lastly, when you shift from 1st to 2nd and do it high rev and fast, the Traction Control activates if you rip the tires loose and kills the throttle.

All this bullshit nowadays sucks. Sometimes I just want my 07' Prerunner back with no traction aids. That truck did whatever I wanted it too, without traction devices interfering, since it didn't really have any.

I'm at 62k miles on my truck and I haven't done it once, the difference between the two gear locations send pretty obvious to me. That said, my wife and sister regularly find first when looking for reverse and vice versa.

Interesting. I hit it regularly going fast. It happens. Bad design, but I'll deal with it :)

No - never happened, but I have driven multiple cars that have reverse in the same spot - BMW, VW, AUDI to name a few...

Here is another thought. Not all transmissions have the same spring tension for reverse. My 07 had great lockout on reverse, my 16 had none and I would hit reverse in a rush. My 18 has spring tension between the 07 and 16.

I would argue that it could be the truck!

Coming from a '14 Wrangler, that had a sloppy long-throw MT with reverse as right (through a very light gate) and back, I can tell you that it is infinitely better on my '17 Tacoma. Missing 6th and hitting reverse was a weekly event and sounded like you were grinding the transmission to death. The Tacoma MT is a joy to shift compared to the Jeep.

Are you serious? You mean 4HI? 4LO isnt meant to allow you to gain enough speed to go 2nd to 3rd and if you're in 4LO at 25mph AND gaining speed, there's your issue....

I don't understand these guys saying "well I was in a hurry at the light." What? Obviously you're not paying attention to your driving. You look up from your phone and oops everyone is going. You can TELL when a light is about to change if you don't have your eyes on something else.

It's a little higher pitch than that clicking noise your truck is making because you left your turn signal on for 8 miles when you merged onto the interstate.

What Interstate? It's 8 miles to town, just have to watch for ice, deer, rocks.

These shifters DO have non-linear mechanisms... you have to pull up ever so slightly. My wife always has trouble getting my truck into reverse.
