Does it lock out 2nd when downshifting above a certain speed? I swear it does. Almost rear ended someone cause I couldn't get it in gear. I was trying to get into second from third around 30 mph.

My first and second gears are both notchy, especially when cold. Whenever I park it almost feels like I’m hurting my gears when putting it in first with the engine off.

Never a problem, when it was brand new it was a bit of a bitch for reverse. Rev matching?

Like a few others here, I find I depends on the RPMs. I found my 2nd Gen easier to drive.

I was going to say that. Any transmission will be like that if you’re trying to go for an aggressive downshift. Mechanically speaking, it’s hard on the transmission to downshift without a proper (or at least close) rev match. You’re relying on the synchros to bring the whole gear set up to speed and then slip the clutch a lot when you downshift without any rev matching.

I think everyone needs to learn on a 10 speed truck (like a tractor trailer). Everyone says they know how to drive manual...until you don’t have any synchros to do the work for your ass and you look like an idiot all over again!

I’m going to say I think this is not a problem, and rather just a safe artifact of normal transmission operation. Yay!

Besides, extra care will buy me a new one if it shits the bed.

Not necessarily notchy.. if I go above 2500rpm in first then second falls right in. Down shift is no issue

2nd and 3rd can be issues for me as well.

Haven’t paid enough attention to what the underlying reason is but revs match seems to help ease the clunk or notch into 2nd/3rd.

    Truck is at 30,000 miles

After 6K, I found at 2500 rpms and fully depressing the clutch my rig shifts smoothly through all 6 gears.

Mine has always been notchy going into 3rd, but the rest were pretty smooth. Within the last month, though, I've noticed a big change with 2nd. It's become worse than 3rd. Since it was a noticeable change all of a sudden, I feel something's gone wrong with mine. Have an appt at the dealer on Saturday. Hopefully it's something simple. I'm at 10,500 miles today.

Mine is notchy going into 3rd, all the others are smooth. I changed out the OEM transmission fluid for Amsoil synthetic at 5K miles, it didn't make any difference. I have just <16K on the truck at present.

You want notchy? Try a Jeep JK. Taco is smooth as silk compared to the Wranglers I have owned.

Nope. I often downshift into 2nd at around 35mph to 40mph.

Gotta rev match. It will be very tough to get into gear if you don't rev match.
