I’m getting a manual Sport soon. Since it doesn’t have remote start what happens if I start it to warm up in the winter and walk away?
Does it shut off? Does it need the key close by?

You need to leave the key in the ignition.

There is no need to warm it up in the winter though. There is a “defrost” button that uses elements for almost instant heat.

Driving is the quickest way to warm up the engine/tranny.

If you turn temp and fan to max heat get some heat from a supplemental heating element until the coolant warms up.

Enjoy the third pedal I'm dreading the end of the option.

Please explain the defrost button/supplemental heat, I've watched countless vids on my new truck but never heard of this

I believe our trucks have a supplemental electric heating element in the ductwork, to allow for near instant “heat”, now it’s not HOT, but when it’s 12F and you can get near instant 40-60F air, it helps,,, a lot.
Disclaimer- I made those numbers up, but I think it get the idea.

I know it's already been answered - but to share my personal experience, my Tacoma is probably the quickest to start blowing hot or cool air of any vehicle I've had...As for the cool air - I can literally freeze myself in 85 degree full sun within a couple of blocks. I do have Carbon CXP tint, which I'm sure helps that.

That said - as for "warm up" time (unrelated to cabin temperature) - I just wait for the Continue button on the center stack to "click itself" just to give everything time to start up, then I put it in Drive and off I go.

Hm, my Tacoma is the slowest to blow hot air out of all my previous vehicles. Takes a while to get to normal operating temperature, 4-5 miles in the wintertime.

There are a few requirements in order for the PTC heater to turn on.

Firstly, it only comes with the V6 model Tacoma.
Next, the following parameters must be met:
    • AC temperature set to max heat
    • Blower turned on
    • Coolant temp 65°C (149°F) or lower
    • Ambient temp 10°C (50°F) or lower

Bad idea; bad for the engine as warming up does significantly more harm than starting it, clicking on your seatbelt, and driving away, and bad for you when someone hops in your vehicle and drives away with it.

This is what I have experienced also. Works pretty well on cold mornings.

Did not know the Tacoma had that. Interested to see how that works once mine gets delivered.

I know know the '23 in certain models comes with remote start with the AT. Does anyone know if the manual has the components but the remote start is disabled?

    1: when it’s -40 I don’t care, I want a warm truck
2: I’ve had vehicles with over 300k on them and always let them idle to warm up in my yard, literally everyone in northern climates I know do this as well. Never an issue.
If it is “bad” for the engine it must be negligible

OP, if it’s in your yard just run out and start your truck, or buy an aftermarket remote starter. I wouldn’t live without one in the cold winter months.
