MTB problems and Crappy Tailgate Latches

Hey all,

So as the title suggests I'm having some issues figuring out a good solution for hauling mountain bikes with my busted tailgate. Also I know others have posted about this issue but I haven't found much in terms of a solution. So let's jump into the issue.

I bought my 2014 SR5 PreRunner back in February and shortly after the cheaply designed tailgate latch failed (of course when the tonneau cover was locked on). Since then I've been trying to avoid buying a plastic Pop n Lock replacement but haven't had any luck finding anything else. If someone knows one please let me know.
Second issue, I normally use a tailgate pad to hang multiple bikes over the tailgate however the pad I have obstructs the view of the backup camera. Has anyone come up with a good solution for this like relocating their backup camera and installing a simple locking latch handle instead?

I've already removed the junk latch and handle mech that was on there (mistakenly thought I might be able to fix it) and now have a make shift epoxy plastic cover bolted on in place (I'll take pic for shits and giggles later). But seriously is there nothing better out there like a metal handled latch or at least something remotely robust?

My tailgate cover has a velcro flap that allows access to the tailgate handle. I just fold the flap up and under itself and I can see out the rear view camera. I can take pics if you want. Cheers

 

Thanks for your reply. I'm familiar with the Dakine, Raceface, and Fox tailgate pads but have not got around to finding a good sale on one yet. Which do you have and how does it perform for your Tacoma?

I have the raceface cover. It has the tie downs and fits the Taco well. It wasn’t too costly either. Some pics for you, sorry about the glare! Cheers

The flap has little standoffs that velcro to it and keep up up and out of the way of the camera. Price was right and it has pockets on the side that faces the inside of the bed for tools and whatnot. I regularly have 4 bikes on it and no problems.

 

Bomberstrap. Works like a tailgate pad, but a minimal approach. Now they cant force you to shuttle

 

Cool, but cost the same as a full size pad. It would be really expensive in Canadian funds!!!
