IBPs can't be adjusted without taking the shock apart. But with the limited real-estate with a coilover only (no secondary), it's the only way to get shaft position sensitive dampening.

Okay, this is starting to come together for me. can you confirm/correct this?

-emulsion/smoothie shocks offer adjustable dampening through changing internal shims but they do not offer shaft position sensitive dampening.
-internal bypass offers adjustable dampening and shaft position sensitive dampening, but you have to take it apart and change shims to make adjustments. benefit is that it fits inside a coil for coilover.
-external bypass shocks offer adjustable dampening and adjustable position sensitive dampening. position sensitive dampening can be adjusted with hex key and wrench so you don't have to take them apart.
-the king performance OEM replacement looks like it's emulsion shocks and emulsion style coilover? So no position sensitive dampening? which must be why people add a secondary bypass shock?

Emulsion doesn't mean smoothie. Emulsion means no IFP (internal floating piston). Emulsion means the nitrogen and oil are charged together within the same cavity (like hydro bumps).
With shocks that have a resi, the IFP separates the oil and nitrogen cavities inside the resi. Non-resi shocks may also have an IFP separating the two cavities in the main shock body.

Any shock without some form of bypass has no shaft position sensitive dampening adjustment. You can get by with shaft speed sensitive valving tricks like a flutter.

IBP's have two sets of valve shims. In the bump zone the pin plugs the orifice forcing all the oil through the thicker set of valve shims giving more dampening (watch the video above).
Traditional bypasses have directional bleed valves that are adjustable to allow more or less oil to bypass the shock valving depending on the shaft location.

Regardless of above, valving is the main key. Bypasses are for fine tuning.

Thank you for the detailed response. I really need to redo my rear suspension in the spring and my cluelessness isn't helping the planning phase. I think I'm on the right track now though

Watch my new build. I've got 12" King triple bypasses on the garage floor going in this winter.

I'm already following your build thread, but so far it's only made me less sure of what I want :( your post about why shackle flips are overrated made me question how I was going to do the Chevy 63s

All-Pro Expo pack? Everyone was out of stock when I was buying and I found a couple pair in stock at Toyota of Dallas. Don't know if you've checked with them yet but if you haven't, they may be worth a look.

Yessir. Good looking out, I'll give them a buzz.

None of their off the shelf packs are going to be enough to keep the fat ass up on my truck. Keeping the rack, RTT, and dual batteries in the bed all the time. Not to mention the shit on the roof and the 35 hanging off the ass. Which means custom pack and twice as much $$$.
There are several guys here in norcal that all have similar weight setups to mine with the AP Expo pack and have the ride height I'm looking for.

I've been looking for some for about a month and haven't found any. Not even Toyota of Dallas last time I checked.

    Would love to find some.

How the F will that fit under an OE UCA...aftermarket UCA's already smack 2.5 ( 3.0 OD ) springs at droop so it seems like an OE UCA would smack those big ass springs a loooong time before full droop...what am I missing ?

Edit -WTF #2 how the hell is the OD of that spring going to clear the CV ?

You have to run the UCA eliminator kit and they only work on a 2WD. :D

Have you looked into Alcan leafs? I don't have any experience but I've heard their heavier duty springs are able to handle weight well. I think they build custom packs too.

    Edit: Although, definitely more expensive.
