The same size you can fit on a stock Tacoma. Up to 35's if your balls have dropped and are not afraid of using a grinder with a cutoff wheel and a BFH. I'm still amazed how everyone seems to think that coilover lifts, spacer lifts, etc. have some magic property that change tire clearance on compression. All those lifts only change clearance at ride height. The suspension still moves up and down. First time you stuff the tire in a driveway, you are back to normal. But I digress.

Broadly answered, thin circular shims on either side of the piston that control the speed of oil movement through the flow ports that ultimately controls the shaft speed and shock dampening.
Off the shelf valving is...off the shelf. It's a cookie cutter valving without taking into account driver preferences, vehicle and weight configuration, and intended use (terrain). Custom valving allows for the driver to get the most out of their purchase and tune to suit his/her needs.

More specifically, so you want to understand shocks eh? This links below should get you started.

Well if you are just going to stick to facts, math, science and geometry this thread is going to get real boring...

The coil over bible @jberry813 linked above is a great read, part 1 should be required reading

@Taca Suave has a more politically correct answer to this than I do. So I'll just quote him and add one of my other posts as supporting details.

So question for you guys, I have maxtrac spindles and fox 2.0 RR Coilovers with 14" eibach 650# coils (0 preload) and camburg balljoint uppers. I don't think I'm getting a full 4" of lift. It's an 06 DCSB and all I have is an SOS hybrid bumper and some 4x innovations sliders. Is that enough to lower the front end a half inch to an inch?

    Something doesn't sound right.

I thought Icons come with 13" 650s from factory? You have no preload? Sounds like you need to add some.

IIRC Icon says 0-3" lift on their website. I'll have to go look now but my 1st answer is you need to crank those up and get it aligned after your happy with the height.

Fox coilovers with aftermarket 14" springs. But the spindles give 4" of lift. (2wd gay shit) which with the extra inch of spring, I should be at 5" of lift total, right?

My bad, I honestly thought Icon when you said 650 even though you CLEARLY typed Fox. My apologies and I'm officially the 1st dumb ass response in the 2.0 thread.

Clearly my 3am start 10 hour work day has rendered me useless....

    Time for bed I think
