I wonder if this is Willy (the elk that camped with me a few years back)? It was in the same area...

I will be forever grateful for the rangers and their message at YNP. A most excellent presentation by a bio prof who rangers during the summer gave a talk on Pronghorn Sheep. Except none showed up until right at the very end. Some people left but he stayed and continued on. Really one of the best presentations at a NP.

Yep, that's 5 for the year so far....

Favorite FB post of the day from the YNP page: Park rangers should be allowed to trap and relocate humans who violate wildlife rules.

Relocate them? Why don't we just shoot them dead? They're reproducing like rabbits, have no natural enemies, and are outstripping the environment's ability to sustain them.

They definitely should be able to at least shoot a tranquilizer dart in their dumb arses, drag them to a holding pen and then
have the Rangers take selfies with their human trophies...haha.

That is what happens when natural selection is eliminated. People find another way to remove themselves from the gene pool.

    MT Girl,

Given your experience (and report on TW) from last winter you might offer you services as test rider and critique the wide tire snow coaches next winter.

    http://trib.com/lifestyles/recreati...cle_0fd54d8e-2ee6-52e2-ad16-bb2799349b78.html

In the winter of '96 I had the pleasure of riding in the old Bombadier coaches - ear plugs were available but even with those it was sort of like rolling down a hill in a garbage can shared with large portion of rocks. I was glad I had the experience.

Yeah...the tracks are LOUD! I think my hearing recovered faster after a concert than it did (or didn't) after my last snowcoach ride. I took a ride on one of the Bombardier's when I was a kid too so I've had the full experience. I remember driving away from the snowcoach office and seeing the one with the big tires sitting across the lot - I was already thinking "why can't we take that one?!?!" One of the reasons that they went to guided snowmobile groups only was because of hte effect of the engine noise on the animals. One snowcoach makes a hell of a lot more noise than a whole pack of snowmobiles!
I hope they do switch to tires - and I'm sure the snowcoach companies would agree. The tracks are kinda of a maintenance nightmare - since their rotation/mechanics are different than a tire the drivers end up having to floor it the whole time so the engine is racing but you're only going 30mph - the equivalent of running on the interstate in 2nd gear, they're rougher riding so the suspensions take a beating, they have to change them out every summer since the vehicles are used to tours in the summer as well, then you have to have somewhere to store the tires or the tracks depending on the season, and you can't carry a spare track. If a track breaks then you're dead in the water and waiting for another snowcoach to rescue you.

In '96 the park was just starting to use vans with tracks (which were wider than the bodies), and the tracks threw so much snow that covered the windows - no so good for sightseeing.

Probably a larger reason for ditching the Bombadiers was that repair parts where no longer available. Our driver said that on the road failures were daily occurrence's. Lots of off hours welding going on too. Still, I was glad to have the chance to ride in the icon winter travel vehicle.

They still have a few that they use regularly but they're more of a novelty these days - kinds like the old tour buses from the 20's and 30's that they have. I imagine for every one running Bomber there are 3 or 4 that are being used as parts donors to keep it going!

Ah, I completely missed the link. That's to bad. Not sure I agree wit euthanizing the bear though. Its bear country. It's pretty common knowledge that a mama griz will go above and beyond the norm when they have a cub with them. I feel like anyone who is in the park as much as the hiker understands that. Not to say he was at any fault, but it seems more of a "hazard" of the job, if you can call it that. Either way it's to bad.
