Animals were pretty sparse this weekend - probably due to the weather. In the fall they're usually SUPER active and not hard to find. There was about 6 spike bull elk around mammoth and about 60 girls. No big bulls, or maybe they were hiding. Saw about 100 trumpeter swans throughout the park. a few bison. saw (and heard) a pack of wolves, 5 black ones and one grey one. and almost had to share my coffee and oatmeal with an elk as she grazed through my campsite this morning - i was sitting on my picnic table and she passed by just a few yards away!

I started my camping season in Yelly in April and ended it there too. Can't wait for next year!

If you're toting an Australian around, you wait. It was chilly.

The best part of Yellowstone is that no matter what you see or don't see, being there is fantastic - esp. when the parking lot is empty. It truly is a magical place, worthy of many visits.

Good that the night wasn't too cold.

be sure to check your local PBS listings for Nature: Christmas in Yellowstone. Its an older program, not shown everywhere, but if you can catch it its certainly worth a watch! They usually rerun it around here every year.

So I almost stepped on this guy....or he almost stepped on me....
I was snowshoeing and wasn't paying attention to my surroundings, was too focused on where my feet were, when I heard two quick "whoomp" noises. I froze and looked up to find him running across the trail I was on. He had been bedded down next to the trail about 20 feet ahead of me! Thankfully he ran perpendicular to my track and not at me as he covered more than the distance between him and I before I even knew he was there! Once he got a little ways off the trail he calmed back down and laid down again, apparently happy that I wasn't pursuing him anymore.

There are park employees and their families that live in the Mammoth area year round. The companies that operate the hotels and restaurants have housing for their staff. Most all of the other employee housing is seasonal/temporary or located just outside the boundary of the park. There are winter caretakers that live in the interior of the park - they check on the facilities daily to make sure that the heaters are working and that there are no burst pipes, caved in roofs, etc. I want this guy's job when he retires...

We are thinking about spending next Christmas at Yellowstone. We are thinking about staying at the Old Faithful Lodge. Do you know anything about Christmas at the lodge? How rough is the snowcoach ride? Is there other places to stay that you would recomend that in the park or outside the park?

Christmas at old faithful is something I'd love to do someday as well. I believe there are packaged deals that include all of the transportation, food and lodging. The snow lodge and dining hall are all that's open in winter so not a lot of choice inside the park. If you want to stay outside in either gardiner/mammoth or in west Yellowstone there are a lot more options for hotels and such. Snow coach and snowmobile tours are available in both areas too. If you book a snow coach make sure you request to be on one that has the big arctic tires and not the tracks. They are freaking loud and rough and I will never go on one again. Massive headache afterwards, worst than any concert I've ever been to.

Since the wintertime is the easiest for me to take off, our plan is to drive across country. Of course to sitesee there and back, maybe visit some family and friends, too.
So if we do the Old Faithful Lodge deal for Christmas and take the snowcoach with arctic tires, where do we leave our vehicle?

Most of the snow coach operators are based in either West Yellowstone or Gardiner...or you could leave it with me. I'll take good care, promise :burnrubber:
